Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels come from a toy spaniel breed which began in the 1600s in Europe as the favorite playing companion of King Charles II. These dogs are known for their happy temperament, intelligence, and small size. They make loyal companions and have long, silky coats that come in four varieties: Blenheim (a red and white combination), Tri-Color (black, white and tan), Black and Tan, and Ruby. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are true lap dogs, and characterize the Toy Group because of their loving and trusting demeanor.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are not considered hypoallergenic, though they don't shed heavily and their coats are relatively low-maintenance. As with all breeds, dander (dead skin cells) and saliva are produced, and those are what many people are allergic to, which may cause reactions from pets regardless of the breed.
Your Cavalier King Charles should have a balanced diet consisting of high-quality, species-appropriate food. Foods like healthy, fresh proteins, wholesome vegetables, and essential fats can help your dog thrive and build a strong foundation for excellent health. To ensure your dog is getting the right nutrition, you should consult with a veterinarian about what and how much food is suitable for their needs. Additionally, you may consider supplementing your pet's diet with vitamins and minerals for added benefits. Additionally, avoid giving your Cavalier King Charles food meant for humans as it can upset their digestive system and nutrition balance.
Preparing for a Cavalier King Charles can be an exciting yet overwhelming experience. First, you'll want to make sure your home is properly equipped to welcome your new best friend, so having the necessary supplies like a food dish, toys, collar, and leash are a must. Additionally, research different diets, training strategies, and exercise plans that will ensure your new furry friend remains healthy and happy. Depending on your plans, you may also want to enroll your Cavalier King Charles into obedience and/or agility classes to help them get used to being around people and other animals.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are small to medium-sized dogs, typically weighing between 13 and 18 pounds and measuring 12 to 13 inches tall at the shoulder. They come in four distinct varieties: Blenheim, Tricolor, Ruby, and Black and Tan. These varieties may differ in coat color and markings, but all of them are considered equal. The Blenheim coat is chestnut and white, while the Ruby is a deep, rich mahogany red and the Tricolor has an overall black base with white and tan markings.
The amount of time you should walk your Cavalier King Charles depends on their individual needs and activity level. Generally, around 20–30 minutes of exercise is recommended for adult Cavaliers per day. However, younger dogs may need slightly longer walks—up to an hour—to ensure they get enough physical activity. You may also want to include a few shorter walks throughout the day if your dog is more active. Keep in mind that all exercise should be tailored to your pet’s energy level and restrictions.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are extremely friendly, loving, and playful dogs that generally get along well with children. They usually enjoy being around them and like to please their family. While all dogs need to be trained and provided with proper socialization, Cavaliers are especially gentle and usually have a natural affinity for kids. They combine a kind, patient demeanor with a playful spirit, making them a great companion for kids of all ages looking for an affectionate and loyal pet. With supervision and guidance, an open-minded Cav could provide hours of entertainment and joy.
The amount of time you need to dedicate to training your Cavalier King Charles varies depending on the age, temperament, and activity level of your dog. Generally speaking, it is recommended that you dedicate 10 minutes each day to working on basic commands, such as sit and stay. Additionally, it would be beneficial for your Cavalier King Charles’s physical and emotional health if you took them out for frequent, leisurely walks for approximately 15-30 minutes on a daily basis. You can even practice commands as you walk to give your pup some mental stimulation.
