Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are a loyal, friendly, and loving breed of dogs. They have a long lifespan, typically anywhere between 12-14 years, and have a thick wavy coat that is both silky and luxurious to the touch. As their name suggests, they were originally owned by King Charles II and were bred to be a companion animal. Today, they continue to thrive as a much-loved family pet, being especially intelligent.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are known for being low-shedding, which means that they tend to have very little fur that comes out when they are brushed or groomed. While all dogs hold onto some fur, these smaller breed dogs tend to have a lighter coat that doesn't tend to shed as much as some of the other breeds. In comparison to other breeds like German Shepherds, whose fur is a bit thicker and requires frequent brushing and grooming, this breed usually only needs to be groomed a couple of times a month in order to maintain a smooth, clean coat.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have a hearty appetite and, like many other dogs, appreciate a varied diet. They typically do best with meals balanced in proteins, carbohydrates, and other nutrients, such as unsaturated fats and vitamins. Food that is designed specifically for their breed will provide the best nutritional benefits, as it is usually tailored to provide all the nutrients they need in adequate amounts. Typical meals for Cavaliers involve dry kibble, wet food, high-quality canned goods, and other forms of fresh proteins, such as lean meats.
To properly prepare for a Cavalier King Charles, it is important to get the necessary supplies ahead of time. Start by purchasing pet food, a water and food dish, a bed or cushion, and dog treats. Also, get a brush and grooming supplies for maintaining its coat health, toys for it to play with, a leash, and an ID tag with your contact information should your pet become lost. Be sure to set aside time each day for feeding, exercising, and playing with your Cavalier King Charles; these activities will help keep your pet healthy and happy.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are classified as small-sized dogs, typically weighing between 13 and 18 pounds when fully grown. They have a compact build with relatively short legs and a graceful, wavy-haired coat which can range in color from ruby, black and tan or tri-colored. Due to their size and temperament, they can generally adapt well to apartment living and are generally good with children. They are considered low-shedding and low-odor, making them relatively maintenance-free and easy to care for.
Many Cavalier King Charles owners claim that their pups tend to enjoy water activities like swimming, especially in warmer climates. While they may not be extrapolating on the same level as some aquatically-inclined breeds, many Cavaliers show a natural affinity for paddling around in the water. Their bodies are light and balanced for swimming, and some love to go off-shore and dive. Although this activity isn't universal across all Cavaliers, most that have been given the opportunity to swim seem to enjoy the experience.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are well-known as excellent family companion dogs. They have sweet temperaments and are enthusiastic to please, making them a great pet for families. Not only are Cavaliers friendly and great with children, but they are also eager to learn and respond exceptionally well to positive reinforcement training. Cavaliers are adaptable and require regular walks but their small size means they are relatively low maintenance. Cavaliers are also very social dogs, and they love being around their owners. This makes them great for families that enjoy taking their canine family members with them on outings and trips.
Training a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel can be rewarding if approached properly and with consistency. While they are intelligent dogs and learn quickly, they can be headstrong and require gentle, firm direction from their owners. It is important to start training early and stick to basic commands to ensure success and a well-behaved pup. Be sure to provide lots of positive reinforcement with treats and praise and maintain a consistent routine to get the best results and make the training process simple and enjoyable.
