Questions & Answers
The Cavalier King Charles is a small breed of Spaniel that originally originated from the United Kingdom in the 1600's. These beloved dogs are known for their gentle nature and ability to bond with their humans. Though small in stature, these dogs are incredibly adaptable and thrive in any living environment. As well as being affectionate and loyal companions, they are also intelligent and eager to please, making obedience training a breeze. Not only are they great companions, they are also known for their beauty and grace, having long, silky coats, long ears, and wide eyes.
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is generally known for its silky, wavy coat that is longer on the chest, muzzle, ears, and legs. They have a thick, long, glossy coat which is a real eye-catcher. The colors of the coat can come in black and tan, ruby, black and white, and tricolor. Behind all that luxurious hair, they have an affectionate, intelligent, and friendly personality. The breed requires regular brushing to keep its coat in good condition. It is also recommended to check for any mats or tangles that might occur.
Cavalier King Charles are generally quite hearty eaters, but there are some things they should avoid in order to remain healthy and happy. People food, such as chocolate, onions, raisins, grapes, and macadamia nuts, are all highly toxic and should never be given to Cavaliers as snacks. Fat trimmings from human meals can also cause digestive upset, so keep human food away from your Cavalier. Other potential hazards include bones, which can splinter, and dairy products, which are difficult for them to digest.
To become the best puppy parent for your Cavalier King Charles, it is important to create a safe and nurturing environment. Provide plenty of opportunities for exercise and mental stimulation. Establish a consistent and positive reward-based training program with rewards such as treats, playtime, and praise. Spend quality time interacting with your pup and provide lots of cuddles. Set regular potty and feeding times and always keep to the same schedule. Brush and groom your pup regularly to keep their coat clean and healthy. Stay up-to-date on their vaccination schedule and annual vet checkups.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels come in four size varieties based on the AKC breed standard: Toy (12 to 13 inches at the withers), Blenheim (13 to 14 inches at the withers), Tricolor (13 to 14 inches at the withers), and Ruby (14 to 15 inches at the withers). Each size is determined by the height measured at the withers (the highest point of the shoulder blade).
The answer to how many minutes per day you should walk your Cavalier King Charles will vary depending on the age, size, and health/fitness level of the dog. Typically, puppies of this breed can benefit from light physical activity including short walks throughout the day. When the dog is older, a more consistent 15-20 minute walk twice a day is recommended in order to keep the dog healthy and in shape.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are a particularly loving breed and are known for their friendly and affectionate nature. They make wonderful companions for children and families and are usually good with kids. They are a very sociable breed and enjoy playing and cuddling with people of all ages. As such, Cavaliers tend to be very patient and have a good understanding of boundaries making them an ideal pet for households with younger children. They also require minimal grooming and exercise, making them a good fit for children who can’t commit a lot of time or energy to a pet.
Yes, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are considered highly intelligent dogs. They are known for their loyalty, enthusiasm, and eagerness to please their owners, which means they pick up commands and develop relationships quickly. Cavaliers have the ability to master advanced obedience tasks and can learn to understand and respond to a variety of cues. They possess natural problem-solving skills and are quick to detect patterns, making them well suited for agility and competitive obedience training. They also have a great capacity to remember, so they're versatile enough to adapt to situational changes and respond to commands from their owner.
