This breed of dog maintains a gentle and loving demeanor, while also being one of the most popular toy breeds in the world. Due to their small size and happy disposition, they have been known to travel everywhere their owners go and they have no problem adapting to different settings. They are also well known for developing strong bonds with their families and enjoying lots of cuddle time.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are considered hypoallergenic breds and are known for being non-shedding breeds. They don't lose fur-like some other breeds, and only require a moderate amount of grooming. While this breed isn't guaranteed to never shed, their coats are generally low-shedding and easy to groom and maintain.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels (CKCS) need a balanced diet in order to stay healthy and happy. While what is right for each individual is subject to personal preference and depends on the dog's age, size, and activity level, there are some dog foods that are generally recognized as good for CKCS. High-quality dry kibbles made with real meat, such as lamb, chicken, beef, rabbit, or duck, which include added grains (like brown rice or oatmeal) as well as essential vitamins and minerals, usually do the trick.
Before bringing home your new Camelier King Charles, it's important to ensure that your home is ready for them. Start by making sure the area where they will be spending most of their time is pet-proofed. Move any cords, wires, and plants out of the area and remove any items that may be easily broken or cause choking hazards. Securely gate off any stairways or outdoor areas where they may have access. Create a safe space with their crate, food, water bowl, and bedding to use as an escape as necessary.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels come in four size variations. The largest size is the 'Blenheim', which stands at 12-13 inches and usually weigh 13-18 pounds. The 'Tricolor' is slightly smaller at 11-12 inches and 12-14 pounds. A smaller sized Cav is the 'Ruby' standing at 10-11 inches and weighing 12-15 pounds. The smallest of the four is the 'Toy' standing at 8-9 inches and weighing 8-12 pounds.
Each Cavalier King Charles needs at least 30 minutes of daily exercise, which can be divided into two, 15-minute walks. For older Cavaliers, short, frequent walks are best, since they may get tired easily. For younger Cavaliers, longer walks, playing fetch, and running around in a larger space can help keep them fit and healthy. However, adjust the duration and intensity of the walk depending on the age and health of your Cavalier. Moreover, walks can help your Cavalier release any pent-up energy, so it’s important to ensure they get enough exercise every day.
