Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have a rich history; they were originally bred in the 17th century as indoor companions for King Charles II. They were so beloved by royalty that the breed remains forever intertwined with British culture. They’re also known for being right on the cusp of being a lap dog—they’re small enough to curl up in laps, but they’re sturdier than a lapdog, making them perfect cuddle buddies.
The Cavalier King Charles has a silky, medium-length coat that is generally straight and silky to the touch. It has the signature long, wavy frills that the breed is known for like long, velvety ears, fringe on the chest and long plumes on the legs and tail. The coat comes in many colors, including Blenheim (a white coat with chestnut marks), tricolor (black, white and tan) and ruby (deep red).
You should feed your Cavalier King Charles a high-quality, commercially-prepared dog food that has been specifically formulated for the breed. Dry kibble is recommended as it can help clean their teeth and reduce plaque. You can also supplement their diet with fresh or frozen vegetables, cooked lean meats, and eggs. Avoid giving them rawhide, table scraps, bones, and sugary treats as they can damage their teeth or put them at risk for diseases such as diabetes and pancreatitis. Additionally, providing your Cavalier with water throughout the day is important for their overall health and wellbeing.
It is important to prepare your home for a new Cavalier King Charles in order to ensure a comfortable and safe environment for your pet. Start by providing a comfortable place for your pooch to sleep, such as a soft bed that is placed in a quiet area of the home. You may also want to puppy-proof your home by putting away or securing any items that may pose a potential hazard. Items such as cords, small objects, and potential toxins should be unavailable to your pet.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are among the smallest of the Spaniel breeds, typically weighing between 10 to 18 pounds and standing 12 to 13 inches tall at the shoulder when fully grown. Despite their small size, they have large hearts and personalities that extend far beyond their stature. The sweet and gentle nature of the Cavalier King Charles make them an ideal pet for many families, making them beloved family members and value companions for their owners.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel dogs need a moderate amount of exercise for their size and age. For the average adult Cavalier King Charles, daily walks and a few play sessions will generally be enough. Physical activity should be of moderate intensity, such as brisk walking, jogging, and free play in a fenced yard. Puppies require as many as three walks per day as their bodies are still developing. Adequate exercise will keep your dog healthy and fit and is important for proper mental and physical stimulation.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have a very friendly temperament and can usually get along well with other pets, if they are properly socialized. As with any pet, proper introduction and supervision are always important to ensure that everyone in the household is safe. Teaching your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel good manners and proper behavior around other pets from an early age can help the transition to living together much smoother. To have a harmonious household, it is best to monitor all interactions between the different animals for the first few weeks while giving them time to adjust to their new environment.
Training a Cavalier King Charles can be a very rewarding experience, however, just like any breed, it requires dedication and patience. It is important to establish ground rules and provide consistent instruction to help them learn their boundaries. To get the most out of their training, start slowly and advance gradually over time. Encourage positive behaviors with positive reinforcement by giving them treats and praise. Keep the training sessions short and upbeat to keep them entertained while still helping them learn. When correcting behavior, do so in a gentle and firm manner.
