Questions & Answers
Cockapoos are fascinating companion animals due to their unique combination of traits from their parent breeds; the Cocker Spaniel and the Poodle. Not only do they tend to have a great personality and smarts, they are also low-shedding and hypoallergenic which makes them popular pet dogs for people with allergies. As if that weren't enough, Cockapoos come in several different colors and sizes which can make them the perfect fit for just about any home.
Although Cockapoos are usually referred to as "hypoallergenic", the breed is not completely allergy-proof as there is no such thing. Each dog produces a certain quantity of proteins found in saliva, dander, and urine which produce the reactions that cause allergies. However, Cockapoos are often reported to be a lot less allergy-inducing than many other breeds. Many owners of Cockapoos have reported that they or members of their family who have allergies still had no problems with a Cockapoo in the household.
Cockapoos should not be given anything that is not specifically formulated as a food for dogs. Avoid giving your Cockapoo human snacks such as chips and chocolates as these will not provide your pet with the balanced nutrition it needs and can be toxic. Table scraps and leftovers are also not recommended as they can contain excessive fat, salt, and other ingredients that are unhealthy for dogs. Onions and garlic are also off-limits for your pet. Certain fruits and vegetables such as grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, and mushrooms should be avoided due to their toxicity to dogs.
Before bringing your new Cockapoo home, you should take some essential steps to make sure your home is prepared. Start by puppy-proofing the space, moving any household items that may be damaged due to chewing and restocking any areas that may be affected. Then designate a specific area for your pup, using dog beds, blankets, or crate to create a comfortable environment. Additionally, ensure that you have all the necessary items such as chew toys, leashes, bowls, and food ready.
Cockapoos can range in size as they are a mix of two different breeds. Generally, these breeds tend to be smaller, so most Cockapoos will stay in the toy or miniature size range and rarely grow to be larger then 15 pounds. There are cases where they could grow to reach up to 20 pounds, but this is more rare. By taking a look at both the parent breeds, specifically the Cocker Spaniel and the Poodle, it's easier to gain a better understanding of the size range.
Cockapoos are an active, energetic breed and require substantial exercise to remain healthy and happy. Generally speaking, it's best to give Cockapoos around 1 hour of physical exercise each day; this could include brisk walks, playing fetch, or visiting a dog park. Additionally, Cockapoos should have mental stimulation provided in the form of playtime and obedience training in order to keep their minds engaged. If exercised appropriately, Cockapoos naturally become well-mannered and well-adjusted to living in a family environment.
Generally, Cockapoos are known for their loving, gentle and affectionate nature which makes them great family pets, particularly for families with kids. They tend to be sociable and friendly, often seeking out attention of any kind. Cockapoos love playing with children and especially enjoy the games that young kids often enjoy playing. As long as the children are taught to respect the dog and not to be overbearing, Cockapoos should adjust well to family playtime. However, it's always best to provide close supervision whenever a dog and children are together to ensure that everyone remains safe.
Training a Cockapoo is an activity that takes considerable effort and commitment, but it can be both rewarding and enjoyable. Cockapoos are sensitive and intelligent dogs that respond positively to rewards-based training. They are among the few breeds that are actually bred to be sociable and generally responsive to training. With a consistent routine and lots of praise for good behavior, you can teach them basic obedience commands, good manners and proper social skills. It's important to keep training sessions short and positive, as this will help your Cockapoo learn more quickly and maintain focus without becoming bored or frustrated.
