Questions & Answers
Cockapoos are a crossbreed class of dog, produced by crossing a cocker spaniel and a poodle. They come in a variety of coat colors, ranging from beige to dark brown. Cockapoos are usually energetic, jovial, and loyal dogs that make loyal and loving companions. Cockapoos are usually low to non-shedding, due to the fact that their coat is a combination of the two breeds. They are considered great family pets due to their affable and calm nature.
The Cockapoo is known for its unique combination of a poodle's curly coat and the fun-loving personality of a Cocker Spaniel. This creates a hybrid that has a beautiful, luxurious coat that can be long and wavy or short and curly. The texture can be somewhat dense and plush or soft and woolly. It is often said that the Cockapoo’s coat can consist of a variety of colors such as white, cream, black, silver, chocolate, sable, and all sorts of combinations.
A healthy diet for your Cockapoo should include high-quality, nutritious ingredients that provide per order percentages of protein, fat and carbohydrates. Look for food formulated specifically; for medium-sized dogs, and with high-quality proteins from real chicken, lamb or fish sources. Avoid foods with low-quality proteins such as meat by-products or meal. As with most dogs, you should supplement with vitamins and omega 3 and 6 fatty acids when providing kibble, and include fresh vegetables, usually blended into their food.
Yes, Cockapoo have certain special requirements to help maintain their health and ensure that they live a long and happy life. They require regular grooming including regular brushing, routine bathing, nail-clipping, and hair trims. Keeping their diet balanced with high-quality food is important too; being mindful of their caloric intake in order to maintain a healthy weight. Exercise in the form of walks, playtime, and a variety of activities helps keep Cockapoo physically and mentally stimulated and content.
Cockapoos come in a wide variety of sizes, depending on the type of parent breed they are bred from. Generally, the Cockapoo is considered to be a smallto medium-sized breed, typically ranging in size from around 6 to 25 pounds and measuring anywhere from 11 15 inches in length from the shoulder to the paw. Miniature Cockapoos can weigh anywhere from 6 12 pounds and can measure as short as 11 inches in length, while Standard Cockapoos usually reach the maximum size of 25 pounds.
Cockapoos are active, energetic dogs that do best with plenty of exercise. On average, they need a minimum of 1 to 2 hours of activity a day. Ideally, it is best if you can provide them with both physical and mental exercise, like a long walk or run, playing games, agility, or obedience training. Remember to start off slow and gradually increase the duration and intensity of exercise as they get older and more fit. Additionally, depending on the individual dog's age, breed, health, and lifestyle, they may require more intense exercise to keep them happy and healthy.
Absolutely! Cockapoos are very affectionate and are eager to please their owners— qualities that make them an excellent fit for first-timers. The Cockapoo temperament is laid-back and docile, so they're not inclined to become demanding or overly aggressive. Plus, because they're relatively low maintenance and low shedding, Cockapoos are great for new owners who may not have a ton of extra time on their hands. With regular, consistent training and attention, Cockapoos are a great breed for anyone interested in owning a dog.
Training your Cockapoo requires consistency and patience, but the effort can be incredibly rewarding. Start by familiarizing your pup with their new home and teaching them basic commands such as ‘sit’, ‘come’ and ‘stay’. Make sure to reward them with small treats when they obey. Socialization is also important so take your pup for walks and find activities that they can participate in to expose them to different people, animals and scenarios.
