Questions & Answers
Cockapoos are a hybrid-breed, often also referred to as a designer-breed. Cockapoos are a mix of a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle which have been around since the 1950's. They are a loyal, friendly, and affectionate breed that make great family pets as they get along well with children and other animals. Cockapoos are known for being low-shedding, low-dander and they range in size from 10 to 24 inches in height and 10 to 40 pounds in weight.
The Cockapoo coat is generally soft and fairly long and can range from a tightly-curled texture to straight and wavy. It is non-shedding and does not require a lot of maintenance, however regular brushing will help keep the coat healthy and strong. It is also quite abundant with a wide variety of colors. Generally, Cockapoo coats come in shades of brown, red, gray, cream, black, and apricot. They may have a combination of these colors as well, giving their coats a unique and attractive look.
Cockapoos have sensitive digestive systems, so it's important to be mindful of what you feed them. Anything that is high in fat, sugar, and salt can be particularly damaging to their health. Avoid giving your Cockapoo any chocolate, candy, chips, onions, grapes, raisins, caffeine, alcohol, and certain types of nuts. Also, it is not advisable to give your Cockapoo human foods that have been heavily seasoned with herbs and spices, or that are abnormally salty.
Setting up your home for your new Cockapoo can involve several steps. To ensure your pet's safety and well-being, invest in a crate or kennel with a soft bed for your pup to sleep in, particularly when you are not at home. Secure gates or baby latches will help prevent your pet from exploring beyond their safe space. It is also important to provide plenty of toys, especially ones that promote chewing and puzzle solving.
Cockapoos are hybrids, which means they are not considered to be a specific breed. Since they are mixes of the Cocker Spaniel and Toy Poodle, they usually range from 10-30 pounds and measure around 13-20 inches in height. Thus, Cockapoos could be considered small-to-medium sized dogs, and would not be considered "big" when compared to other breeds. That being said, some Cockapoos may reach the size of an average Cocker Spaniel, which can grow to weigh up to 35 pounds.
The amount of walking your Cockapoo needs will depend on their age and individual health needs. Generally, an adult Cockapoo should get 45 minutes to 1 hour of exercise daily. For puppies, they may need shorter walks of 15-20 minutes per day until they mature. Additionally, you should make time for several shorter walks throughout the day to get in extra physical activity and help with potty-training.
Yes, Cockapoos are definitely great dogs for first-time owners since they're extremely low-maintenance. They're gentle and affectionate, so they would make great companions for any novice pet parent. Cockapoos are also intelligent and easily trainable, which helps new pet owners learn the ropes without too much difficulty. They also have low grooming needs, so there's no need to worry about too much maintenance or expense. On top of that, Cockapoos are highly adaptable and can easily adjust to different living environments.
Training a Cockapoo can be easy for some people, although for other people it may be more challenging. As with all dogs, consistency and patience are key in teaching obedience and housebreaking. Cockapoos are usually intelligent and highly eager to please, which is helpful in training. It's important to start training early and to remain consistent with your commands and expectations. Treats can help to encourage your Cockapoo as they learn. Socialization and exposure to different people and environments is also key to having a well-trained and happy Cockapoo.
