Questions & Answers
Cockapoos are one of the most unique and interesting breeds because they can be a hybrid of two other popular breeds, the Cocker Spaniel and the Poodle. Cockapoos typically have the body shape of a Spaniel with the curled fur of a Poodle, making for a very unique and majestic-looking breed. They generally do well with children and are very intelligent, loyal, and social. Cockapoos love their owners and will usually spend hours playing with them or sitting on their laps.
The Cockapoo coat is a combination of two coat types, being a combination of a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle. This creates a very unique, fluffy coat that is well-suited for most climates. It has a mix of both parents' coats, typically being curlier than a Cocker Spaniel and longer than a Poodle. When brushed regularly, the coat remains very soft and fluffy. It also has an excellent ability to keep dirt and grime at bay.
Cockapoos are generally quite healthy and have a hearty appetite for all kinds of food, however it's important to know what not to feed them in order to maintain their well-being. Human foods, such as chocolate, onions, garlic, grapes, and raisins, should all be avoided as they can cause serious digestive problems and illness in Cockapoos. Don't feed your pup anything with caffeine or alcohol as they can be toxic, and refrain from giving them table scraps as these foods often contain high levels of fat and sugar that can contribute to weight gain and create digestive issues.
To ensure your Cockapoo feels welcome in your home, there are a few essential items you should prepare. Start by getting a comfortable bed, as it helps Cockapoos feel protected and safe. Additionally, purchase a few chew toys to help redirect any destructive behaviors such as chewing on furniture or shoes. It is also important to have some snacks on-hand for training purposes. Finally, you should set up a schedule and plan out meals, potty breaks, and playtimes to help your Cockapoo learn its boundaries and develop a predictable routine.
Cockapoos can vary in size based on their lineage, but generally, they come in four main sizes. The smallest Cockapoo is a Toy Cockapoo, which stands at 6 to 10 inches and weighs 4-10 pounds. The Teacup Cockapoo stands at 6 to 8 inches and weighs anywhere from 2 to 5 pounds. The Miniature Cockapoo is the best of both worlds, standing at 10 to 15 inches and weighing 15 to 20 pounds. Finally, the Standard Cockapoo is the biggest, standing at 17 to 21 inches and weighing 25 to 45 pounds.
Absolutely! Many owners take their Cockapoos running. Depending on the age and size of your Cockapoo, you may want to wait until they are old enough to handle the exercise. Generally speaking, Cockapoos can handle short jogs with their owners even from an early age. It is important to keep in mind, however, that Cockapoos have a thick undercoat that means they can become hot quickly and can easily overheat. Be sure to dress your Cockapoo appropriately and have plenty of cold water for your pup if you are going running with them.
Absolutely! Cockapoos are friendly, loyal and alert dogs, making them great companion for kids. They have affectionate, fun-loving temperaments and are unlikely to become aggressive, which makes them an ideal choice for families. Cockapoos are very sociable and energetic, which gives them a great opportunity to interact with children. They also require regular exercise, which means they could benefit from being taken to the park with the kids. Cockapoos are also highly intelligent and can be trained quite easily, so teaching them basic commands and tricks can be a great bonding experience.
It depends on your individual Cockapoo as each will require different amounts of exercise and training. Generally, an hour a day is a good amount of time to spend training your Cockapoo. Split the hour up into shorter sessions to keep your pup engaged. Start with basic commands such as sit, stay, come, lay down, heel, or go to your bed. You could also play interactive games such as tug of war, or substitute in treats for reward-based praises. Physical exercise is important too, so make sure to include an appropriate amount of active play each day.
