Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are a breed of intrepid and affectionate small hounds with a surprisingly rich history. Although these spirited pups are often seen as comical due to their lower-than-average stature and strong personalities, they were once renowned for their heroic work as badger-hunters in Germany. In recognition of their bravery, Dachshunds were even granted official recognition in Germany's National Dog Show in 1895. Dachshunds can come in several different coat varieties, including longhaired, wiredhaired, and smooth.
Dachshunds are considered to be a low-shedding breed of dog, but they are not non-shedding. While they do not shed nearly as much as many other breeds, they do still shed, so they require weekly brushing and regular grooming in order to control excess fur. Dachshunds have a double coat that can range from very short to long and silky, depending on the strain. All of these coats are composed of a wiry, hard outer coat with a softer, fluffier undercoat.
Dachshunds should never be fed anything with caffeine, chocolate, excessive sugar or salt, avocado, macademia nuts, grapes, rawhide chews, onions, garlic, lemon, cherry or apple seeds, alcohol, or any type of food or product which contains Xylitol. They should also not be fed anything that is obviously rotten, moldy, or otherwise unhealthy. It is important to give Dachshunds special attention to their diet and make sure that they are eating appropriate-sized meals at appropriate times.
Becoming the best possible puppy parent for your Dachshund begins with doing your research and understanding the breeds unique needs. Most importantly, you'll need to provide your pet with enough exercise, a healthy diet, regular veterinary checkups, as well as mental and emotional stimulation. Bonding with your Dachshund will be an essential part of your journey. Spend as much time with your pet as possible, take them on walks and let them explore the outdoors, and make sure to use positive reinforcement when training. Additionally, make sure to always provide your pup with a safe and comfortable environment.
Gaining a better understanding of the size you can expect your Dachshund puppy to reach is essential. The size range of Dachshunds generally lies somewhere between 8-9 inches tall when measured at the shoulder and those same puppies usually grow to a weight of between 16-32 pounds at adulthood. Because Dachshunds come in two sizes (standard and miniature), there is some variation to the average size of a fully grown adult. Standard Dachshunds tend to weigh in at around 21-31 pounds while mini sizes will hit a max of around 11 pounds.
Dachshunds require relatively little exercise compared to some other breeds. They should be taken for a moderate daily walk of at least 30 minutes; however, they can continue to benefit from much longer walks if their owner has the ability and time available. Regular, vigorous exercise is key to ensuring proper bone and joint development in a growing pup, as well as allowing them to expend energy so they don't develop behavioural issues. This can be supplemented with a few short sessions of indoor play with toys that stimulate both their physical and mental capabilities.
Dachshunds are generally friendly and inquisitive dogs that can get along exceptionally well with kids. In fact, they have been known to form special bonds with them from the moment they enter their lives. Dachshunds often develop a strong curiosity for life and an intense loyalty and affection for their human companions that can often make them great companions for children. They can also be fairly easy to train, with patience, which is great for teaching kids basic rules of obeying and interacting with dogs.
The amount of time needed to train a dachshund each day will depend on the age and experience of the specific dog, as well as its attention span. Generally, puppies of any breed should be given multiple shorter training sessions throughout the day, but playtime and puppy naps should also be part of the routine. For adult dachshunds, it is recommended to provide at least 20 minutes each day of practice and reinforcement, as they tend to focus better in shorter increments.
