Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are a loyal and mischievous breed of dog. They were bred to hunt badgers in Germany, and therefore have an inquisitive nature and longer than average legs, making them perfect for digging. They are low to the ground and come in three sizes standard, miniature, and kaninchen (rabbit), with two coat varieties smooth and long-haired. Generally speaking, they are energetic and can be active and curious indoors, making them greathouse pets.
Dachshunds are not considered to be a hypoallergenic breed, meaning they could still cause allergies in some individuals. Even though hypoallergenic dogs do not actually exist, some breeds of dogs do typically produce less dander, which can reduce the chances of having an allergic reaction. Dachshunds have fur that can range from long to short and are known for their shedding, which means they will likely produce dander that can cause an allergic reaction in susceptible individuals.
A Dachshund's diet should be a well-rounded combination of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats in the correct ratios for their size and activity level. If you choose to feed your Dachshund a commercial, dry kibble, make sure you look for one that is formulated specifically for their breed. While wet and canned food is an option, the high fat content should always be monitored. Adding raw foods, whole grains, and fresh fruits and vegetables is a great way to give them variety, and extra vitamins and minerals.
Before getting a Dachshund, you should buy some essentials to get your pup off to a great start. A bed, air-safe and chew-proof crate, and a collar with an ID tag are must-haves. Other items that can make your pup's life easier are food and water bowls, leash and harness, toys, and a grooming brush.
It depends on how you define "big" when talking about Dachshunds. These dogs can be quite small; they typically have an average size of 5-6 pounds. However, they can also be as big as 10-32 pounds, depending on the breed. So, while a less-massive Dachshund may not seem "big" in comparison to other canines, larger ones certainly can be. Ultimately, size is relative and people who consider them to be an average-sized dog may be surprised at how genetically varied they are.
Generally, Dachshunds tend to enjoy swimming as they are small and have a short build which helps them to be well-suited for the water. However, some individual dogs may be averse to this activity, and it is important to always keep an eye on your pup when they are in or around water. It is suggested that you introduce them to deeper water gradually in order to make the experience more pleasant. Dachshunds are equipped with their short legs which give them an advantage in the shallow water.
Absolutely! Dachshunds are a fantastic choice for family dogs. Highly intelligent and loyal, they are especially good with children. They are known as an affectionate and outgoing breed, known for their spirited nature. Dachshunds also form close bonds, making them an ideal companion for families. They respond to training and can acquire a variety of skills, from basic obedience to performing tricks. They are people-oriented and crave daily human contact. They adjust well to family life and do not trigger any particular allergies.
The amount of time you need to dedicate to training your dachshunds each day largely depends on their age and how quickly they are able to learn. Young puppies will require more frequent and sometimes more intensive training than an older dachshund. A general rule of thumb is to provide 15-20 minutes of positive reinforcement training each day in addition to any necessary grooming and feeding. If you can, try to also have longer sessions one or two times a week in which you focus on teaching your dachshund basic commands such as 'sit' and 'stay'.
