Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are unique in many ways, but perhaps the most interesting thing about them is their claim to fame as the world's shortest hound breed. They are renowned for their hardy physical disposition, despite their diminutive stature, and their reputation for loyalty is legendary. Not surprisingly, Dachshunds have evolved over the years to excel in a variety of activities, ranging from hunting badgers and other small game, to being competitive in agility and obedience sports.
Dachshunds have a unique coat that is short, smooth, and shiny. The colors vary depending on the breed but generally span from a pale cream, tan, or bright tawny to a deep mahogany or black and brown brindle. The coat pattern is usually single-color or a combination of two colors. Dachshunds need to be groomed at least once a week to keep their coat healthy and shiny. It is also important to regularly check for excessive shedding, which can indicate bigger health issues, such as parasites, allergies, or skin infections.
Dachshunds should never be given chocolate of any kind, as this can be toxic and cause digestive problems. Any food that is high in fat or contains onions, garlic, grapes, and raisins should also be avoided, as these too can cause digestive issues. Small pieces of fruit or vegetables, such as carrots or apples, can be given as treats but should not make up a substantial portion of the animal's diet. Similarly, table scraps should be avoided as these can be high in fat and difficult for the dog to digest.
Dachshunds have some specific requirements regarding diet, exercise, and grooming. For one, they are prone to obesity and so should be fed a diet specific to small breeds consisting of high quality, nutrient-dense ingredients that are low in fat. They may benefit from probiotic supplements and glucosamine to ensure healthy bones and joints as they age. Exercise is important, as they are prone to boredom and gain weight quickly without proper physical and mental exercise. Additionally, they have a strong prey drive and need to be trained not to chase other animals.
Dachshunds come in two size varieties—standard and miniature. The standard size variety can be up to 32 pounds and around 8-9 inches tall, while the miniature variety will typically weigh 11 pounds or less and reach 5-6 inches tall. As a breed, they are usually longer than they are tall, with short, thick legs and a long body. Dachshunds also vary in fur length. Their coats can be smooth, wirehaired, or longhaired.
Although Dachshunds are adept swimmers, not all of them enjoy the activity due to their unique body shape. On average, Dachshunds have a disproportionately large upper body set upon short legs, giving them their recognizable shape. This specific build makes it harder for them to maneuver in water than other breeds. While some Dachshunds may take to swimming with enthusiasm, others may require more coaxing or may ultimately decide it's not a favorite activity.
Dachshunds can be excellent family dogs. These loyal and affectionate pups are highly intelligent and can easily adapt to their homes and lifestyles. They are bold and tenacious, yet also cheerful and playful, all of which are important traits in a family-friendly dog. Dachshunds have an independent streak, which can provide a balanced mixture of challenge and fun. They are also very affectionate and love spending time with their family.
Training a Dachshund is not necessarily an easy task. This type of breed is known to be stubborn and independent, which are two traits that can complicate the training process. That being said, it is entirely possible to properly train a Dachshund with patience and consistency. Consistency in training is key in order to get your pup to understand the expectations. Utilizing rewards for positive reinforcement is an effective way to create favorable behaviors. As Dachshunds are delightful and devoted companions, investing the time and effort to train them right is totally worth it.
