Questions & Answers
Dachshunds make for great companions! They are intelligent, loyal, and sweet. Did you know that Dachshunds originated in Germany over 400 years ago, and were bred to hunt badgers? They are also known to be quite spirited and brave, despite their small size. In fact, when Dachshunds are motivated, they can have a very impressive amount of endurance and energy.
Although Dachshunds have a very short coat which may give the impression that they do not shed, that is not the case. Like almost all breeds of dogs, Dachshunds have some amount of shedding. Since these dogs have short fur, however, the amount that is shed is significantly less than a long-haired breed. Furthermore, Dachshunds tend to shed less than other breeds with similar coats, such as terriers.
Dachshunds should not be fed anything that is too hard, chewy, or sharp, as this can be a choking hazard. In addition, certain foods such as grapes, raisins, chocolate, onions, garlic, grease, raw dough, or anything containing xylitol should be avoided, as they can all cause serious health problems. Furthermore, Dachshunds should not be given large bones, as their short jaws can be easily injured by such items.
Before getting a Dachshund, it is important to make sure you have all the essential items necessary to keep your dog happy and healthy. High on the list should be food and water dishes, a collar, leash or harness, a comfortable bed, and toys. You will also need to stock up on high-quality dog food, treats, and chew items. Your pup will need regular grooming items, such as a brush, comb, and nail clippers, and dental care items like a toothbrush and toothpaste. You may also want to purchase a crate for training and safety.
Dachshunds are generally considered small-sized dogs. These loyal and spunky dogs typically measure between 8 and 9 inches tall at the shoulder and usually weigh between 16 and 32 pounds. In comparison to many of their fellow canines, they are up to 5 inches shorter and 20 pounds lighter than dogs of other breeds. As a result, they are often recommended for those seeking a canine companion but who either have limited space or limited energy to exercise larger dogs.
Dachshunds can be both strong swimmers and fearful of the water, so it depends on the individual Dachshund. Generally, they can adjust to water quite easily, although some will love swimming while others may need some gentle encouragement to enjoy it. It is not uncommon for them to paddle with all four feet in shallow water and can even do a decent doggy paddle in a pool. Introducing swimming gradually can help them become comfortable and confident, however due to their short legs, they are not designed for long-distance swimming in the sea.
Dachshunds can make great pets for first-time owners, but there are some important considerations to keep in mind. Dachshunds tend to be active and require regular exercise and mental stimulation, so it's important for owners to be sure they have the energy and ability to commit to meeting those needs. Additionally, these dogs are very vocal and may bark more than desired if not trained consistently. Thus, handling and obedience training will be beneficial to ensure a happy and healthy home.
Training your Dachshund can be a rewarding experience. First, it's important to understand that different breeds of dogs have unique temperaments and personalities that can require different strategies. Dachshunds are known for being intelligent and sensitive, so rewards-based training works well with them. Start by setting up an environment that is conducive to learning, and teaching your dog basic commands such as 'sit', 'come', and 'down'. You should also crate train your pup and introduce house rules like no jumping on furniture or barking unnecessarily.
