Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are a breed of small, lively dogs that are popular for their long bodies and short legs. They come in a wide variety of sizes, colors, and coat types.
The Dachshund has a typical, short-haired coat that is relatively easy to groom. They have an outer layer of tough, straight guard hairs which makes them weather-resistant and a fine, soft undercoat. The typical colors of the coat are red, wheaten, black and tan, and wild boar as well as brindle and dapple patterns. Additionally, many breeders have developed other color combinations such as cream, chocolate, and silver. The coat must be brushed regularly to maintain a healthy sheen and remove dead hairs.
Dachshunds are usually considered a medium-sized dog, so they should be fed kibble formulated to meet the nutritional needs of an active and lean body type. That being said, it is important to feed them high-quality, age-appropriate food for their size. After they attain adulthood, adults should have their caloric intake adjusted to maintain their ideal bodyweight. Their daily meals should consist of foods such as lean proteins, such as chicken and turkey, to help maintain healthy tissue and muscle. Whole grains, such as brown rice or oats, are beneficial for providing carbohydrates for energy.
Dachshunds are special dogs that do require a little bit of extra care. Their unique body shape and long backs mean they are prone to back and spine issues which must be taken into consideration when providing exercise and activities. They require special diet and nutrition to keep their long bodies looking fit and healthy. Socialization and regular obedience training is important for Dachshunds in order to ensure a well-mannered pup. Exercise should be limited for these dogs. They can't really participate in strenuous activities, and too much rough housing and jumping can put strain on their backs.
Dachshunds come in two standard sizes: Standard and Miniature. A Standard Dachshund typically has a body that is 16 to 32 inches in length and weighs between 16 and 32 lbs fully grown. Miniature Dachshunds are usually 11 inches or less in length and weigh not more than 11 lbs. Generally, Miniature Dachshunds are bred from Standard Dachshunds. The breed of Dachshunds is also broken into Coat Varieties such as Smooth, Wirehaired, and Longhaired.
The amount of time your Dachshund should spend walking per day depends on its age, size, and exercise habits. Puppies usually require more time walking and running than adult dogs do. A good goal for most adult Dachshunds is between 30 to 45 minutes of walking each day. This should ideally be divided into two or three 11-15 minute walks. Remember, a tired Dachshund is a happy Dachshund, so encourage additional activity throughout the day and consider approaching your veterinarian if you need guidance specifically for your pup.
Dachshunds are often known for their friendly, outgoing personalities, so they usually do well with other pets if properly introduced. As with any dog, early socialization will help a Dachshund become comfortable with other non-canine pets. Consider introducing them to the other pet in a comfortable and familiar environment, such as their own home. Additionally, introducing the animals gradually and using positive reinforcement when they interact politely can help them get along more quickly. With patience and proper training, it is very likely that Dachshunds and other pets can develop a strong friendship.
Dachshunds are considered to be highly intelligent dogs. They have an innate sense of awareness and are able to learn very quickly. While they are best known for their deep devotion to their owners, they are also eager to please and very clever. They understand commands easily and can learn a variety of tricks and behaviors. Given their intelligence, they do best with consistent training and socialization. The best way to foster their intelligence is to keep them physically and mentally stimulated by providing them with puzzles, creative and interactive games, and long walks.
