Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are known for being small, adventurous, and playful dogs. Perhaps you weren't aware, but there are actually two varieties of Dachshund—standard and miniature. Standard Dachshunds can weigh up to 32lbs, while the miniature variety's weight rarely exceeds 11lbs. Another unique trait of Dachshunds are their elongated bodies and their short legs, which are commonly attributed to their development for hunting badgers in Germany. Additionally, these canine companions boast durability, sporting thick, weather-proof double-coats.
The Dachshund's coat is very recognizable and distinct. They have a double coat, with two distinct layers. The top coat is made of short, coarse hair, while the bottom layer is made up of thick, straight hairs. The color of the coat will vary depending on the variety of Dachshund, but it is usually either brown, red, black, or a combination of these colors. Their coat can also have patterns in it, such as brindle, dapple, or sable.
Dachshunds have somewhat complex dietary requirements, so finding the best dog food for them can be tricky. Generally, you'll want to look for dry foods that offer large-breed formulas when searching for the right diet for your Dachshund. High-quality dry food should contain about 20-30% protein and 10-20% fat, but make sure it's safe for Dachshunds by avoiding those with too many artificial ingredients.
Before getting a Dachshund, it is important to be prepared. You should acquire a high-quality collar and leash, food and water dishes, a bed, and a brush for grooming. A crate and a few toys will also come in handy. Exercise equipment like a leash and harness, a playpen, and a puppy playpen can help your pup remain safe and healthy. A doggy carrier will likely be useful for vet visits or long-distance trips.
Dachshunds come in two sizes Standard and Miniature. The Standard size can range in height from 8-9 inches and can weigh from 16-32 pounds. The Miniature size can range in height from 5-6 inches and can weigh up to 11 pounds. In terms of type, Dachshunds can be broken down further into three categories short-haired, which have smooth coats, wire-haired, which have wiry coats, and long-haired, which have softer, longer coats.
The amount of walking your Dachshund should receive daily depends largely on their age, activity level, and health. Younger dogs require less walking than older dogs and active dogs need more than less active ones. Generally speaking, an adult Dachshund should receive two to three walks a day, each lasting 10 to 20 minutes. If you notice your Dachshund becoming tired on their walks, aim for shorter, more frequent walks. In terms of how much walking per day, aim for a minimum of 20 minutes and build up to 50 minutes as your dog can handle.
Dachshunds can get along well with other animals provided they are given enough socialization and the proper introduction. Generally speaking, these loyal and loving dogs will adapt to an appropriate environment with other species they are exposed to during their puppy years. Although, some Dachshunds might have a high prey drive, they can learn to accept other pets like cats and rabbits with enough patient guidance. Good nutrition and lots of love and play can go a long way towards helping them create a harmonious relationship with their furry friends.
Dachshunds are known for being highly intelligent companions. As canines, they are incredibly trainable, capable of learning a wide variety of commands and tricks. They are also very loyal and alert, often aware of their surroundings and quickly responding to their owners. On top of that, Dachshunds have a strong sense of independence; they can be very clever at problem-solving and take initiative to explore their environment. With a capacity for complex thought and creative ways of expressing themselves, Dachshunds make wonderful, smart companions.
