Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are actually considered a hound dog by the American Kennel Club even though they look like a small version of a German soldier! Their name means "badger dog" in German, as they were originally bred to hunt badgers and other underground animals like rabbits and foxes. Dachshunds come in three different coat varieties: smooth, wirehaired, and longhaired. They also come in different sizes, including standard, miniature, and "tweenie.
Generally, if you are allergic to pets, there is no guarantee that you will not be allergic to a Dachshund. That being said, the likelihood of having an allergic reaction to a Dachshund is usually fairly low, as they are non-shedding dogs. Though you may have an allergic reaction to a Dachshund's dander or saliva, it is likely much lower than in dogs who do shed.
Choosing the best dog food for your Dachshund is a crucial part of ensuring they remain healthy. To best meet the dietary needs of a Dachshund, look for a dog food specifically formulated for this breed. Dachshunds benefit from higher levels of protein and fat than other breeds, as well as certain kinds of fiber, so the kibble should contain these nutrients. Prebiotics, probiotics, and ground vegetable matter are also important ingredients to look for in a Dachshund’s food.
To become the best puppy parent for your Dachshund, you need to take the time to understand the needs, personality and behaviors of your pup. Make sure to provide your pup with plenty of love, affection and exercise; create a consistent routine so your pup knows what to expect; be patient and consistent when training; remember that your pup loves to play and get outdoors; be patient and positive when introducing new people or animals; and remember that praise and reward is key when it comes to training.
It depends on your perspective. Dachshunds are considered “toy” or “small breed” dogs but still generally weigh around 16-32 pounds and can be as long as 8 inches from the shoulder to the ground. Compared to typical “large breed” dogs such as Labs, German Shepherds, and Bulldogs, who weigh generally around 3-5 times that, Dachshunds could certainly be considered small dogs. However, it is less common to see Dachshunds referred to as big dogs.
Dachshunds can be a bit particular about their swimming preferences. While some dachshunds may be true water babies, others may be a bit less enthusiastic. Since dachshunds were bred for hunting, they are instinctively inclined to explore and even hunt in water. However, how they respond to swimming can be highly individual and it might not be a favorite activity. Often, whether or not a dachshund enjoys swimming depends on its individual attitude and early exposure to the activity.
Dachshunds can absolutely make great family pets for those who are willing to commit to their care needs. As a breed they are reliable, fun, loyal, and intelligent companions who love to get a lot of attention and activity. Dachshunds are very active dogs and do best in homes with a fenced-in backyard so they can run around and burn off some of that energy. They can adapt well to all kinds of homes, but thrive with regular exercise and training.
Training any dog, especially a Dachshund, is an important commitment created for the benefit and safety of you and your pup. Different tasks, such as crate training, learning commands, and potty training, may take varying amounts of time each day. It's recommended that you allot at least 10-15 minutes per day to training your Dachshund. Although some days may take more or less time, it's important to be consistent in rewarding behaviors and preventing any potential behavior problems.
