Dachshunds are a breed of dogs known for their quirky personalities, small size, and unique shape! Certainly the most interesting feature of this breed is their signature body shape and size that sets them apart from other dog breeds. They have an elongated body and short legs that make them look like a hotdog or weiner dog. Their relatively long backs have also led to the formation of a club called the Dachshund Club of America, dedicated to improving the breed and protecting it from conformation defects and other health issues.
The Dachshund breed typically has a double coat of medium length. The outer vest is short, sleek, and shiny. It protects the undercoat, which insulates the dog against the cold weather and provides a cushion for its joints. A different shade of fur may be present on the dog's back. The colors range from solid black and tan, solid red, brindle, sable, wild boar, and piebald.
Dachshunds should not be fed anything that is not specifically designed to be safe for canines. Human food such as chocolate, grapes, raisins, macadamia nuts, and onions could all be toxic to Dachshunds and should be avoided. Furthermore, bones, especially those from pork, beef and/or fish, can cause blockages and should also not be included in their regular diet. Giving Dachshunds too much food can be unhealthy and excessive amounts of treat foods can lead to obesity which can cause organ failure and other serious problems.
Making your home Pet-Ready for a Dachshund is an important step to ensuring both your pet's safety and comfort. First and foremost, dog-proof your house, with thorough checks on all wiring and potential hazards. You'll also want to make sure your yard is secure with a fenced yard or designated pet run. Also, designate a specific area in the house for your dog to rest and sleep, such as a pet bed and their own toys and blankets. Provide them with plenty of exercise and enrichment activities, such as taking walks and playing fetch, to keep them mentally active.
Dachshunds come in three sizes: standard, miniature, and kaninchen ("rabbit" in German). The standard size is 16 to 32 pounds and 16 to 28 inches tall; the miniature size is 11 pounds or less and not more than 11 inches tall at the shoulder; and the kaninchen is up to 8 pounds and less than 9 inches tall at the shoulder. Regardless of their size, all Dachshunds have long, muscular bodies and short legs.
Generally, it's suggested for a Dachshund to get at least 15 minutes of exercise per day. However, this can vary based on the age and activity level of your pup. For puppies and more active adults, a longer walk can be beneficial. Depending on the temperament of your Dachshund, you may find they are content to be outdoors for 30 to 45 minutes at a time. It's always a good idea to use a combination of walks, playtime, and indoor time to keep your pup healthy and stimulated.
Dachshunds can make great family pets, and usually get along well with other household pets such as cats and other dogs. With proper socialization, training, and patience, Dachshunds can be an enjoyable companion to a variety of other animals. Introductions to any pet should always be done slowly and carefully, and the Dachshund should be monitored when interacting with other animals. If Dachshunds are properly socialized and trained at a young age they can form lasting bonds with other pets.
