Questions & Answers
French Bulldogs are a lively, affectionate and entertaining breed. Some fun facts about them include: they are among the top ten most popular dog breeds in the USA; they have a short, but powerful mouth enabling them to breathe heavily and snore; and their short coats consist of mostly fawn, brindle, and white markings. One of the more interesting facts about French Bulldogs is that unlike other breeds, Frenchies have a naturally occurring mutation in their DNA which gives them their oversized, bat-like ears.
French Bulldogs can usually be classified as low-shedding dogs, meaning they do not shed long locks of fur. While their short, tightly curled coats are not completely non-shedding, there tends to be minimal shedding as the fur naturally remains within the coat and only needs occasional brushing. On average French Bulldogs tend to lose less fur than other breeds of similar size and shape, making them quite easy to groom. Additionally, due to their coat's short length, French Bulldogs do not require much maintenance compared to longer-haired breeds.
French Bulldogs are moderately active, and need a balanced, healthy diet to help them stay healthy and strong. They should be fed with a high-quality dog food designed for small and medium breed dogs, along with protein-rich meals such as lean meats, fish, and certain vegetables. Fresh fruits can also be added in moderation. For older French Bulldogs, you may want to discuss transitioning to a senior diet with your veterinarian as they develop specific dietary needs for their age. Treats should also be given in moderation, as not to cause weight gain.
Preparing for a French Bulldog can be exciting as well as challenging, but there are steps you can take to ensure that the transition goes as smoothly as possible. First, consider buying or constructing a pet play yard so your pup has a safe space to play in when you're unable. If letting your pup roam freely isn't an option, choose a room they can stay in and provide adequate facilities, like food, water, a bed, and toys.
French Bulldogs are a small-sized breed with short legs and a muscular body, typically weighing between 18-28 pounds and standing about 11-13 inches tall at the shoulder when fully grown. However, the exact size of a French Bulldog may vary depending on the combination of genes they get from their parents and their particular diet and living environment. In general, French Bulldogs are usually a little smaller than the average breed of the same size. So, while some may reach a weight of 29 pounds, generally, most will range between 18-28 pounds.
Professionals typically recommend that French Bulldog owners should aim to give their pup at least 30 minutes a day of exercise, but this is a minimum. Generally speaking, it is best to allow your French Bulldog to get an hour or more of exercise and/or playtime per day for optimal health. You can break it up into two or three walks daily if that is more manageable for you. Some French Bulldog owners have found that splitting the exercise into smaller sessions is better for their pup's mood and sleep habit.
French Bulldogs are a great choice for families, especially those with older children. They are known for being loving, loyal, and rewarding companions. They are even-tempered, easy to train, and eager to please their owners. French Bulldogs have an immeasurable amount of love to give and are incredibly easy to get along with, adapting to any size or type of family. It is important to mention that more regular brushing is needed, as their undercoats can become very matted.
Training a French Bulldog is not difficult and can be a rewarding experience for both you and your pup. The first and foremost tip to remember when training a French Bulldog is to be consistent. Set a schedule and stick with it; this will help your pup acclimate to the expectations of learning and obeying commands. Patience is key; take the time to explain, demonstrate, and occasionally reward your pup for doing something correctly. Treats can be used to entice your pup to learn a new behavior or command, but it is important to not overuse them.
