Questions & Answers
French Bulldogs are very expressive and have quite a bit of personality. They're also one of the more popular breeds in the United States and have been around for over a century. One fun fact about French Bulldogs is that they have larger heads than the average dog a trait both breeders and owners love! They have a stout body and come in a variety of coat colors, but the brindle is the most popular. They are loyal and friendly dogs that do well around children and other pets.
French Bulldogs are considered a low-shedding breed, but as with any dog they will shed some fur. While French Bulldogs do not shed more than average, they require regular weekly grooming to help maintain their coat and reduce the amount of fur around the home. They will still produce some dander which can trigger allergies in people sensitive to pet fur, so it's important to clean frequently and use an air purifier in the home. French Bulldogs also need regular baths to keep their coats from becoming too oily, as well as regular brushing to remove dead fur and distribute natural oils throughout their coat.
French Bulldogs should not be fed food that is too fatty, as it can cause gastrointestinal upset and weight gain. It is important to note that bland or table food should also be avoided, as it lacks the essential nutrients a French Bulldog needs. Additionally, certain fruits and vegetables, as well as snacks like popcorn, chocolate, and nuts, can be dangerous for the dog and so should also be avoided. To keep your Frenchie healthy, only feed them food that is specially designed for their individual needs and closely follow feeding guidelines on the package.
If you're getting a French Bulldog, it's essential to have the necessary supplies for your pup's wellbeing. You'll need a crate for when the pup needs some down time, comfortable bedding, bowls for food and water, a long leash and collar, baby gates to keep your pup in certain areas of your home, a toothbrush and toothpaste to keep your pup's teeth healthy, nail clippers, pet shampoo and brush, potty training supplies, and toys. Additionally, you'll need to provide lots of love, patience, and positive reinforcement.
French Bulldogs are not traditionally thought of as big dogs, but their smaller size varies. On average, French Bulldogs are about 11-14 inches in height and clearly smaller than the typical large breed. Their weight is usually in the range of 16-31 lb; however, some have been known to weigh as much as 50 lb. Even though French Bulldogs may be a bit larger than the average toy or teacup breed dog, their size does not typically classify them as a big dog by comparison.
French Bulldogs are not overly active dogs, but they do still need regular exercise to stay healthy. An ideal exercise routine for French Bulldogs should include short daily walks and occasional visits to a securely fenced off area like a park or dog play area. Frequency is important and consistent exercise is best, so aiming for around 2 hours of activity spread through the week should keep your pup happy and healthy. Grooming activities such as brushing and combing can also help to provide a good workout for your pup while providing a calming effect and can lead to mental stimulation.
French Bulldogs are excellent companions for any family! They are incredibly affectionate and loyal. Even-tempered and gentle, French Bulldogs have a habit of making friends easily with people and other pets. As an added bonus, they are content to relax indoors with their people, making them good apartment and condo dogs. They also require moderate exercise, such as a few short walks and playtime this helps keep them happy and healthy. Due to their size, they are safe for families with young children.
Training a French Bulldog is similar to training most dog breeds. First, it's important to establish yourself as the "Alpha" and the leader of the pack. As soon as your Frenchie is in your home, establish simple commands like "sit", "stay" and "come". Doing these repeatedly will help your Frenchie learn quicker. Additionally, offering positive reinforcement challenges can help your pup stay focused and engaged. These could include using treats, verbal praise or even playing fun games to keep them entertained.
