Questions & Answers
French Bulldogs are known to be a loving and humorous breed. Here are some fun facts about them: They were originally bred to be a smaller version of the English Bulldog and were popular among lacemakers in 19th century France. They have unique bat-like ears that stand straight-up and sometimes even wiggle when they're excited. They do not enjoy cold weather and will usually wear a sweater and snuggle up in a comforter! Frenchies are also fantastic companion dogs because they were bred to spend a lot of time with humans.
French Bulldogs may not be considered completely hypoallergenic due to their short, coarse coat; however, since they shed very little and their skin is naturally dry, people with mild allergies may be less affected when around them, compared to other breeds of dogs. The American Kennel Club recommends that people with moderate to severe allergies take the necessary precautions when trying to determine if they can own one of these dogs.
French Bulldogs have some unique dietary needs that are important to consider. For instance, their flat noses can make it difficult for them to breathe, so smaller, softer kibble is recommended to make it easier for them to pick up and eat the food. They are also prone to becoming overweight, so an appropriate portion size should be monitored they should not overeat. It's also important to consider the composition of the food, as not all nutritional needs are the same for French Bulldogs. A high-quality diet with a balance of minerals, vitamins, and proteins is recommended.
Before bringing home your new French Bulldog, it’s important to get your home ready. Make sure that any items that may be hazardous to your pup are put away and out of reach. Ensure that electrical wires are properly covered and that any pools or ponds are secured with either a fence or a cover. Baby gates can be a great way to keep your pup out of areas you don’t want them to explore. Have a veterinarian already selected and research the best nutrition plan for your new pup. Prepare a bed or space for them to rest and feel safe.
French Bulldogs come in a variety of sizes, although it depends a bit on the individual dog. In general, they range from around 11 to 16 inches (27 40 cm) in height, as measured from the top of their shoulders to the ground. In terms of their weight, they range from approximately 19 to 28 pounds (9 -13 kg). However, it's not uncommon to find French Bulldogs that are outside of these ranges, as each dog is unique and individual in terms of its size.
French Bulldogs are an active breed that requires daily exercise and stimulation to keep them healthy and well-balanced. Depending on the age and size of the dog, experts recommend a minimum of 20 to 30 minutes of structured exercise per day. That exercise could take the form of brisk walks, playing interactive games, or working on agility exercises. As with other breeds, exercise should be tailored to the specific needs and fitness level of the individual dog. Additionally, due to their often-squat stature, overweight French Bulldogs are more susceptible to issues such as breathing problems and difficulty exercising.
French Bulldogs are an ideal companion for families with their playful and loving nature. They love to be around children and are great social interactors. They get along well with other pets, including other dogs, cats, and even reptiles, making them an ideal pet for the family home. French Bulldogs are smart and can be quickly trained. They are also relatively low maintenance, with a relatively short coat that doesn't require much brushing. They are not prone to shed and are highly unlikely to bark incessantly, making them great housemates.
Generally speaking, training a French Bulldog can be an enjoyable and rewarding experience if you are patient and consistent in applying the necessary methods. However, Frenchie owners should be aware that this particular breed of canine is quite strong-willed and independent, so having the right attitude and approach is key to successful training. It’s important to try to remain positive and maintain your focus while training, regardless of the obstacles you may encounter along the way.
