Questions & Answers
French Bulldogs are among the oldest of the “vogue” dog breeds, originating in the 1800’s. Their smaller size, compact and stocky stature, and effortless portability make them the perfect companion for any lifestyle. But their most interesting feature is their disposition: they are the ideal mix of playful and companionable, vigilant and calm. Popular among their fan clubs are their mischievous expressions, loose skin, wide-set eyes, and broad, flat head.
The French Bulldog has a very distinct coat, which can vary quite a bit depending on their type and breed. Generally, their coat is short and smooth, featuring a dense, glossy top layer complemented by a fine undercoat. Most French Bulldogs tend to possess a distinctive brindle pattern that may be black, fawn, or cream, and have distinctive patches of white fur. The legs often have a different pattern from the body and may feature white socks, while the face may have pied markings that include a line of white running between and around the eyes.
When it comes to finding the best dog food for French Bulldogs, it's important to consider the specific dietary needs of your pup. French Bulldogs have a tendency to be susceptible to food allergies, so it's essential to find a food that does not include common allergens like corn and wheat. Additionally, because French Bulldogs prefer wet food over kibble, consider getting a food that offers a combination of wet and dry options, or just wet food.
To become the best puppy parent for your French Bulldog, it is important to understand the individual needs and habits of your pup. Get to know them on a personal level and figure out what they like to do, how they like to socialize, and what rewards motivate them the most. Establish a consistent routine and provide positive reinforcement when your pup listens to commands and follows the rules. Be sure to give them enough excercise and playtime while providing adequate affection to ensure a loving and happy environment.
French Bulldogs typically come in a range of sizes, including extra-small, small, medium, and large. Each size has a height range associated with it, as detailed by the French Bulldog Club Of America. Extra-small French Bulldogs measure up to 11 inches at the shoulder, while small French Bulldogs range from 11 to 12 inches. Medium French Bulldogs measure 12 to 13 inches, and large French Bulldogs measure 13 inches or more. Even within those size ranges, individual Frenchies often vary in size.
Generally, French Bulldogs should get 30-60 minutes of exercise per day, with at least part of it being a walk. Walking helps your Frenchie stay healthy and alert, and helps with developing good behavioral habits. It's recommended that you split up the 30-60 minutes of exercise into several short walks throughout the day, allowing your pup short rest breaks in between. Allowing your pup to explore their surroundings for a few minutes each day is important as well. Keep an eye on them when outdoors and use a leash when walking in areas that are not fenced.
French Bulldogs tend to do very well with children, especially due to their loyal and watchful nature. They tend to be incredibly devoted to their owners and expect, and feel, loved in return. French Bulldogs, although not a high energy breed, still require exercise, and also enjoy playing with their owners and generally engaging with their human friends (children included). With that they can make wonderful family pets. Training from an early age is key, and should be reinforced often in a fun, positive and constructive way.
Training your French Bulldog can be a rewarding experience! To ensure success, it's important to establish a regular training schedule and be consistent with your commands. Before you begin, it's useful to review positive reinforcement and how to effectively communicate what you expect from your pup. Familiarizing yourself with the basics can help you and your French Bulldog enjoy the process of training. During the training sessions, keep them short and simple to prevent boredom. Additionally, use treats and praise to reward them for their good behavior. Finally, remain patient and understanding as your pup learns new commands and behaviors.
