Questions & Answers
French Bulldogs are a small but strong breed of domesticated canine that originated in France several centuries ago. Did you know that they were originally bred as ratters and to be pleasing companions? As their name implies, they are descendants of the English Bulldog, but their more even-tempered nature and their smaller size have long made them popular as companion dogs. What’s more, Frenchies are one of the few flat-faced breeds of canines that can swim, and they are the only brachycephalic breed that is competent in water.
French Bulldogs are not non-shedding dogs. While French Bulldogs do have a short, coarse coat, they do shed, albeit not as extensively as other breeds. Additionally, they require regular grooming, usually a trim or clippings every few months, to keep their coats clean, healthy and free of debris or dirt. However, their low-maintenance grooming requirements still make them one of the most ideal pet breeds for those who want a loyal companion without the mess or hassle of overly-demanding cleaning.
French Bulldogs do have special dietary needs that owners should be aware of. While their diet should be nutritionally balanced, French Bulldogs require more protein in their diet due to their genetic predisposition to develop joint and spinal issues. This means that your French Bulldog's diet should include high-quality dog food with a protein content of at least 18%. Foods such as lean muscle meats, eggs, and fish should be the primary sources of protein in a French Bulldog's diet.
Before getting a French Bulldog, it's important to purchase some key items. You'll need to invest in a good-quality leash, collar, and harness. Additionally, a designated spot for your pup to sleep, such as a dog bed, is absolutely essential. It's wise to invest in some chew toys to help keep your pup entertained. To ensure your pup is protected against fleas and other parasites, make sure to pick up preventative treatment from your vet. Finally, no pup should be without its own bowls for food and water.
French Bulldogs are smaller than most large-breed dogs, making them one of the smallest in the "bully" breeds. A full-grown French Bulldog typically weighs between 16 to 28 pounds and stands up to 12 inches in height. Frenchies are known for their big personalities, making them popular companions for people all over the world. However, given its relatively small size compared to traditional large dogs, French Bulldogs would not generally be considered "big dogs".
French Bulldogs generally enjoy the water and some may even enjoy swimming, although they are typically not great swimmers due to their short legs and heavier bodies compared to other dog breeds. To prevent injuries, it is important to acclimatize your Frenchie to the water before having them swim. Most Frenchies will enjoy playing in the shallow end of a pool, at the beach, or in a lake. For colder climates, opt for using a life jacket as extra precaution.
French Bulldogs make wonderful first-time pets. They are relatively low-maintenance, friendly, and generally get along well with children and other animals. French Bulldogs love attention, making them ideal companions. They don't require very much exercise, so they're perfect for those with busy lifestyles. They have a gentle temperament and can be trained relatively easily with basic commands. Not only are they adorable, but they are also intelligent and have a playful spirit.
When it comes to training French Bulldogs, there is no definitive answer on how many minutes per day are necessary. Since all dogs are different, the amount of time needed to adequately train them varies. With that said, it's important to remain consistent with training. You should set aside at least fifteen minutes a day several days a week to go over commands and work on behaviors, in addition to taking your dog on regular walks. Depending on the progress you are trying to make with your French Bulldog, you may need to adjust your amount of training.
