Questions & Answers
Golden Retrievers are a medium to large-size breed belonging to the sporting group of canines. They are descendants of the retrieving gun dog and are highly intelligent, loyal, loving, and devoted to their families. Golden Retrievers have a beautiful thick two-layer coat with a waterproof outer layer that helps protect them in cold and wet weather. They are known for their gentle demeanor, their cheerful and friendly attitude, and their ability to be very patient and sensitive to their handlers' needs. Golden Retrievers are excellent with children, and they make wonderful family pets.
While there are instances where an individual could experience allergies to any and all dog breeds, it is not likely that a Golden Retriever specifically would be the cause. There may be instances however, where the individual could experience mild allergies due to pet dander and/or fur that the Golden Retriever may produce. A risk assessment could be done to help identify if a person is likely to have allergies around a Golden Retriever and whether the severity of the allergies could be manageable.
Golden Retrievers are active and energetic dogs that require a diet tailored to their specific needs. In general, they should be fed a diet that is high in protein and fat, made up of about 25-30% protein and 15-25% fat. Additionally, their diet should include vitamins and minerals that will aid in joint protection as well as aiding in their overall health. When looking for a commercial dog food, check that it is formulated specifically for large breeds, or ensure that it is AAFCO-approved and contains the right nutrition for a golden retriever.
To ensure your home is ready to welcome a new Golden Retriever, it's important to take some preliminary steps. Start by establishing a comfortable sleeping area with a bed that's easy to clean and away from busy walkways. Have plenty of food, water, and toys available. Make sure to puppy-proof your home by securing any hazardous items and keeping the trash secure. Invest in furniture that's easy to clean and durable for energetic playtime activities. Lastly, create a designated outdoor area that's fenced off to keep your pup safe yet able to enjoy the outdoors.
Golden Retrievers are known for their substance and size. Generally, the breed standard height for a male Golden Retriever is 23 inches at the shoulder. The breed standard height for a female is 21.5 inches. Males usually weigh between 65 and 75 pounds, and females usually weigh between 55 and 65 pounds. Although the breed standard states the average size range, Goldens can be either larger or smaller depending on breeding. However, any size outside of the standard size range means the dog will not fit the AKC breed standard.
Golden Retrievers are an active breed, so they require regular exercise in order to stay healthy and happy. Depending on the dog's age, lifestyle, and overall health, daily exercise should last at least an hour. This can include intermediate to long-distance walks or romps, jogging, biking or even swimming. It's important to keep in mind that over exercising can be just as harmful to a dog's health as under exercising. Consult with your vet on an appropriate exercise plan for a Golden Retriever. Additionally, mental exercise should be provided on a daily basis.
Golden Retrievers are among the most gentle and loyalty breeds of dogs, and, because of this, are well known for being great with children-making them an excellent family pet. They can easily adjust to living with children, are tolerant of children’s high energy and games, and are known to form strong loving bonds with their human families. Golden Retrievers can help children learn the responsibility of caring for a pet, and will provide children with unconditional love and guidance.
Yes, Golden Retrievers are very intelligent dogs. They have an excellent sense of smell and exceptional working abilities, which led the AKC (American Kennel Club) to rank them as the fourth most intelligent dog breed. Golden Retrievers have a natural aptitude for learning and will often pick up on commands quickly if properly taught and rewarded. Their intelligence also extends beyond basic obedience commands, as they are very eager to please their owners. Golden Retrievers will frequently greet their owners enthusiastically and understand when something is expected of them.
