Questions & Answers
One of the most interesting things about Goldendoodles is their temperament. A Goldendoodle is a hybrid of a Poodle and a Golden Retriever, their parents being two of the most intelligent and friendly breeds. Goldendoodles take the best of both parent breeds, making them one of the most friendly and loyal dog breeds. They have medium energy and tend to be playful and friendly with other pets and people, making them a great choice for families with children. They are also extremely smart, which makes them highly trainable.
Goldendoodles generally have a medium-to-long, wavy coat that's typically a combination of the poodle parent's coat and the Golden Retriever's coat. The coat can range from straight to wavy, and sometimes even curly. The texture of their coat is usually very soft, and they are low-shedding and hypoallergenic. Depending on the ratio of poodle to Golden Retriever in their genetic background, it's not uncommon for Goldendoodles to need to be groomed regularly to ensure their coat is kept free of matting.
It is important to be aware of what to avoid feeding Goldendoodles to keep them happy and healthy. It is best to consult with a veterinarian about what type of diet works best for Goldendoodles and limits your pup's access to potentially dangerous food items such as chocolate, alcohol, coffee, or any food containing xylitol. Avoid giving Goldendoodle puppies human food such as grapes, onions, and garlic as these can cause digestive problems, and never feed cooked bones as these can splinter and cause injury.
It is important to take the time to ensure that you have your home prepared for your new Goldendoodle's arrival. To get ready, first you should create a safe environment. Be sure to pick up and put away small items that could pose a hazard. Second, arrange a comfortable sleeping space with a few beds for your pup. Make sure your pup has access to comfortable surfaces at different heights. Lastly, set aside an area of your house for your pup to explore. This might include a few toys, treats, and a brush.
Goldendoodles can vary in size depending on the type of parent breeds used in their breeding program, however, they generally fall into two size categories: Miniature (10-15 inches at the withers and 20-40 pounds) and Standard (15-22 inches at the withers and 40-80 pounds).
The amount of time you should walk your Goldendoodle per day will depend on their age, overall health and exercise needs. Generally, puppies need more exercise than adults, including up to two 30-minute walks per day. As they get older, an hour-long walk at least once a day should be sufficient, but it's best to follow advice from your veterinarian for the specific exercise needs of your dog. Goldendoodles are known to be playful and energetic, so plenty of mental and physical stimulation throughout the day is important.
Goldendoodles make wonderful family dogs for a variety of reasons. They are loyal and affectionate and known to be excellent with children. They tend to be playful, non-aggressive, and full of energy, making them an ideal companion for active families. Their intelligence and eagerness to please make them relatively easy to train, meaning they are quick to learn basic commands; they may even be able to do tricks with proper guidance.
Training a Goldendoodle is not necessarily easy, but it can be made easier with the right approach. Patience and consistent positive reinforcement are the keys to successful canine training. Goldendoodles are highly intelligent, so they can learn quickly and pick up on cues from their owners. Goldendoodle owners should take the time to understand the breed's desired level of exercise, how to control barking, and other basic commands like sit, stay, and come. Taking the time to establish good behaviors while managing bad habits is essential for successful training.
