Questions & Answers
Goldendoodles are hybrid, or designer, dogs created from a Poodle-Golden Retriever mix. They are generally intelligent, people-pleasing, and loyal. Goldendoodles are typically considered low-shedding, but can come in a range of coats that range from wiry like the purebred Poodle to flat or very curly like a Golden Retriever. Goldendoodles can have a good amount of energy and need daily exercise and mental stimulation to stay healthy and happy. Behavioral training is recommended to help Goldendoodles learn how to respond to commands.
Goldendoodles can be a non-shedding breed, depending on their coat type and genetic makeup. Single-coated Goldendoodles have a low-shedding or non-shedding coat, while double-coated Goldendoodles can be moderate to high shedders. A good way to check for a non-shedding coat is to look closely and see if the fur is curly, straight, wiry, or wavy.
Goldendoodles typically have more specific dietary needs than other breeds due to their size and shared heritage between Golden Retrievers and Poodles. A quality diet filled with lean proteins, essential fatty acids and complex carbohydrates is recommended to provide good health and energy. Some people suggest that Goldendoodles should have higher protein diets because of their larger bodies and higher levels of energy, whereas others advocate that they should have less fat due to their barrel-chested nature. Keeping them on a consistent and balanced diet with quality ingredients is recommended for Goldendoodles.
Before getting a Goldendoodle, you should make sure you are prepared with the essential supplies. First and foremost, you should have a comfortable and safe home for your new pup, such as a bed or crate to sleep in and toys to play with. Additionally, food and water dishes, a leash and collar, and food appropriate for a growing pup are all must-haves. Grooming tools, such as a brush and shampoo, are also important to maintain your pup's coat and skin.
Goldendoodles are considered to be a medium-sized dog breed and as such they don't qualify as a small breed. Depending on the size of the parents, they can range from 18 to 90 pounds. A full grown Goldendoodle can come in different sizes, from a mini version which is around 18 pounds, a medium which is between 25 and 49 pounds, or a standard one which can weigh up to 90 pounds. Because of their hybrid nature, the size of the Goldendoodle can vary quite a bit based on the parents' size.
How much exercise a Goldendoodle needs each day depends on its age and activity level. Generally, if your Goldendoodle is a puppy, at least 30 minutes of walking should be done each day, whereas if it is an adult, anywhere from 45 to 60 minutes of walking is ideal. Longer walks can also be beneficial for dynamic breeds like Goldendoodle. Remember to factor in any other activities your Goldendoodle may be engaging in throughout the day such as playing in the yard or with its toys.
Goldendoodles are a delightful breed of dog with a gentle and friendly nature, making them well-suited to life with children. They are loyal and affectionate animals, known for their intelligence and eagerness to please. They often form strong bonds with their human family, often accepting kids as part of the family pack and making excellent playmates for children. These dogs are also gentle and patient, making them an ideal choice for families with young children. Goldendoodles typically do not have a high energy level, making them less likely to accidentally injure children or become too rough during play.
Training a Goldendoodle can be easy, depending on the individual dog and the amount of patience and consistency that the owner uses. Goldendoodles can be intelligent and eager to please, which means they're a breeze to train, but like any breed, they require an owner who is willing to be consistent and establish clear boundaries and expectations. Goldendoodles do require plenty of exercise and an in-depth understanding of the breed's unique needs. They also respond well to positive reinforcement. With technique, patience, and consistency, training a Goldendoodle can be an enjoyable experience.
