Questions & Answers
Havaneses are a small, intelligent breed of dog with a luxurious and curly coat that requires daily grooming. They generally possess a happy and cheerful attitude, are highly trainable and make amazing companions. They have long been sought after for their loyalty, intelligence, and affectionate disposition. In terms of temperament, they tend to be sociable and easy-going—perfect for families with young children. However, they can become frustrated if not properly exercised and mentally stimulated. They also tend to bark in alert when they hear or see something unusual.
Havaneses are usually considered non-shedding. However, all dogs shed to some extent, but the amount of fur they produce is usually minimal. The Havaneses breed has a unique coat that is close to the skin, which is shorter than the fur of other breeds and leaves little to be shed. This breed also has a lack of undercoat, which further reduces the amount of fur that is shed from the dog. On average, Havaneses will lose about 10-20 hairs per day, which is significantly less than most other breeds.
When it comes to taking care of a Havaneses, understanding which foods are suitable to feed your pup is a key factor in keeping them healthy. As a general rule, you should not feed them anything that is high in fat, overly processed, or contains artificial additives. Most human foods are too high in fat and salt to be suitable for a Havaneses, and sweets should be avoided altogether. Avoid foods like grapes, as they can be toxic to dogs; raisins shouldn't be fed either.
Before getting a Havanese, you should certainly purchase some essentials that will ensure that your pup has everything it needs to remain healthy and happy. This includes a leash and collar or harness, age-appropriate beds and toys, food and water bowls, grooming supplies, a brush to keep the coat shiny and tangle-free, and potty pads if you don’t plan on taking them outdoors. You might also consider purchasing a pet stroller and a puppy gate to manage their play area indoors.
Typically, an adult Havanese will weigh somewhere between 7-13 pounds and range in height from 8.5 to 11.5 inches tall. Although many Havanese pups may make it out of puppyhood close to their adult size, growth rates vary from pup to pup and can be affected by diet, environment, and activity levels. When born, Havanese puppies can weigh anywhere between 3-7 ounces, and may double in weight within the first week.
Havaneses are highly active dogs that require regular exercise and mental stimulation to stay healthy and fit. They are known for being affectionate, loyal, and loving which make them great companions. They have an abundance of energy and can be quite mischievous when not given enough attention and daily activities. While they are a small breed, they are incredibly energetic and require a great deal of physical activity. Regular daily walks and playtime outside can help keep them active and healthy.
Havaneses are well-known for their loving and friendly disposition, which makes them excellent family dogs. They also have a great deal of energy and enthusiasm, making them an excellent companion for playing and running around. Havaneses are also intelligent, which makes them fairly easy to train. Moreover, they are not generally territorial so they are not prone to barking a lot. As far as their physical size goes, they are relatively small so they can easily fit into any home.
Training your Havanese can be a rewarding experience when done correctly. First, familiarize yourself with positive reinforcement training so you can effectively instruct your dog. Whenever your Havanese learns something new, reward them with a treat or verbal praise. Begin with basic commands such as sit, stay, and come. Once they learn those, you can tackle more complex behaviors. Make sure to keep each session short since it can take a few repetitions for a new behavior to sink in. Incorporate positive reinforcement with play and keep the atmosphere upbeat and fun for your pup.
