Questions & Answers
Havaneses are an incredibly sweet, intelligent, and entertaining breed of small dog. A popular hybrid of a Bichon Frise and a Poodle, they have a hypoallergenic coat and usually weigh about 10-20 pounds. They have a long lifespan, averaging between 14-18 years. Fun facts about Havaneses include having a personality that is described as "clown-like," enjoying athletic, energetic activities, and being excellent companion dogs that require daily amounts of love and attention.
It is possible that people can be allergic to the Havaneses, just like they can be allergic to other types of dogs. Allergens in the skin, saliva and dander of dogs are common triggers of allergic reactions. So if you are allergic to animals, a Havaneses may not be the ideal pet for you. If you think you may have allergies, then it's important to talk to your doctor or an allergist about the best course of action for you.
When choosing the best dog food for a Havaneses, it is important to chose a food that is exceptionally high-quality and tailored to a small dog's needs. Havaneses are a toy breed, and their stomachs aren't designed to process some of the large chunks of food that are available in some brands, leaving owners to search for premium-quality wet or dry kibble that is well suited to their size. Many trustworthy brands also offer treats that are specially sized and formulated for small breeds, as they have different dietary needs than larger dogs.
Creating a comfortable home for your new Havanese can be an exciting process. Start by puppy proofing your house for the new arrival. Make sure that all potentially hazardous items are out of reach of the pup. Items like small objects, cords, and chemicals should be moved to safe areas where your pup cannot get to them. You should also set up a designated space to serve as your pup's safe haven. This space should be comfortable and afford enough room for your pup to move around. Consider using baby gates or pet barriers to section off parts of the home that may be off limits.
Havaneses can come in a variety of sizes, though size is easily determined by looking at the parents. The breed usually stands between seven to thirteen inches at the shoulder, weighing around seven to sixteen pounds. Males tend to be larger than females, but typically within the same size range. Miniature Havaneses are the smallest size and measure closer to seven pounds, while Standard or ‘Royal’ Havaneses tend to measure between eleven and sixteen pounds.
While it is possible to take your Havanese running, it is not recommended due to their small size and delicate constitution. The high intensity of running can be too much for their small frames and can cause orthopedic issues. While the breed is known for being active, it is advisable to keep their activity limited to shorter, slower walks or jogs of no more than 10 to 15 minutes at a time.
Havaneses are wonderful family dogs! Not only are they incredibly loyal, but they are incredibly intelligent too, meaning they're able to learn quickly and make good watchdogs. They are affectionate and gentle, but also playful, so they fit in great with children, making them an ideal choice for families. They don't require a lot of exercise, but do need plenty of mental and physical stimulation to keep them happy and healthy. They are highly trainable and respond quickly to commands, so it's easy to set boundaries and keep them obeying.
Havaneses can be extremely intelligent; they are considered one of the brightest small breeds of dog. They are often very quick learners, responding well to positive reinforcement. They enjoy engaging in stimulating activities such as puzzle toys and outdoor games. They require regular physical activity as well as mental stimulation from their owners to keep their minds engaged. Havaneses are known for their ability to get along easily with other animals and people, and they want to please, so they usually learn basic commands quickly. Though a Havaneses can be trained easily, their intelligence also means they can learn and retain bad habits.
