Questions & Answers
Havaneses are a toy breed and part of the Bichon group. This class of dog is also known as Bichon Havanese, Havana Silk Dogs, or Bichon Havanais. The Havaneses originated in Cuba and made their way to Europe and other corners of the world, eventually reaching the United States. These dogs are kennel club recognized and have become popular companion pets due to their loving, intelligent, and eager-to-please personality.
The Havanese coat is, quite simply, magnificent! It's soft and silky, yet has a natural wave or curl to it that adds an extra element of charm. It comes in almost any color or combination of colors you can imagine, and can range from solid to speckled. Some of the common colors and combinations are cream, gold, black, white, apricot, blue and chocolate. The coat is also easy to care for, requiring only occasional brushing and grooming to keep it in peak condition.
It is important to know what not to feed Havaneses in order to maintain their overall wellness. Many human foods can be hazardous to their health and can lead to serious medical issues. It is highly recommended to avoid giving them chocolate, sugar, caffeine, dairy, fatty products, raw eggs, raw meat, grapes/raisins, and onions. Most spices should also be avoided, as well as overly processed dietslike dog food or people food that may include preservatives.
Prior to bringing your new Havanese home, it is important to prepare your home to ensure a comfortable and safe environment for your puppy. Make sure to puppy-proof the house by removing or securing any hazardous items such as wires, cords, and small objects; also, block off stairs, balconies, and other areas you do not want your puppy to access. Additionally, be sure to provide comfortable places such as a bed, a crate, and designated areas for eating and drinking; these places are integral to helping your new pet adjust to its new home.
Generally speaking, Havaneses are not considered big dogs. Havaneses are a small breed with a typical adult size ranging from seven to thirteen pounds. Despite their relatively small size, their thick, wavy coats often give them a larger appearance. Although their size can vary from one individual to the next, the average Havaneses stands only a few inches tall and usually measures around 10 to 11 inches at the shoulder. Despite their relatively small stature, Havaneses have the heart of a much larger dog and a fierce loyalty to their families.
It is ultimately up to you whether or not you take your Havanese running, but there are certain considerations you should take into account before doing so. Firstly, the Havanese is a toy breed, meaning that they are not able to endure the same amount of exercise as larger breeds. Therefore, take caution and ensure that your Havanese is ready for the activity. Secondly, talk to your veterinarian and ensure that your pet is healthy enough to go running. The best way to get your Havanese ready for running is to start with short distances and work up gradually.
Havaneses are generally regarded as great dogs for first-time owners. They are intelligent, loyal, affectionate, and responsive to training. They are highly social and thrive on human companionship, making them well-suited to apartment living or for people who don't have access to large yards. Furthermore, they are small dogs that don't require a lot of exercise or grooming, which removes most of the burden associated with dog ownership.
The amount of time you should devote to training your Havaneses each day is a personal choice. However, it is important that you devote time to working on the commands and behaviors you want your Havaneses to learn. Depending on how quickly they learn and remember, a half hour to an hour each day could be sufficient. If you want to train your Havaneses more frequently than that, then it might be helpful to do 10 to 15 minutes intervals throughout the day.
