Questions & Answers
Havaneses belong to the toy breed class. These small and adorable dogs are known for their friendly disposition and intelligence. They are bred as companion dogs, often referred to as Velcro dogs as they are very devoted to their owners. Havaneses are attributed with a long, silky coat that is often white, cream, apricot, or even black and tan in color. These canines typically stand between 9-11 inches in height and have long, floppy ears.
The Havanese coat is quite long and can range from straight to very curly, with most dogs falling somewhere in between. The coat is generally quite thick with a soft, luxurious texture. The length of the coat varies between individuals but the breed standard calls for a long, flowing coat that sits close to the body and should not interfere with movement. When groomed properly, the Havanese coat is quite spectacular with its long and silky hair.
Generally, Havaneses should avoid people food, as most of it is high in fat and sugar, and can cause them to gain weight. Additionally, table scraps can be dangerous for Havaneses due to the potential for choking on large, hard pieces, or ingesting something toxic. Grapes, raisins, avocados, onions, garlic, macadamia nuts, or any kind of chocolate are all foods you should never feed Havaneses as they can make your pup very sick.
Properly preparing for a new Havanese may seem overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be. Start out by researching the breed so you know the basics size, energy level, learning capabilities, potential healthissues, etc. You will want to create a safe and comfortable space for your Havanese by gathering items such as a crate, bed, collar, leash, and toys. You should also set up a routine for the dog so they understand when it's time to eat and exercise.
The size of a Havaneses can vary, depending on the lines they were bred from. Generally, Havaneses weigh approximately 7-13 pounds when fully grown, making them a small to medium sized breed, ranging from 8-11 inches in height. This is considered to be the smallest of the Bichon family and is not typically seen as a "big" breed of dog. However, they do have a big personality and bring lots of joy to those around them.
Havaneses need daily exercise to stay physically and mentally healthy. The amount of exercise needed depends largely on the age and condition of the pet. Generally, younger and more active Havaneses need approximately 45 minutes of playtime or walks a day, while senior or less active Havaneses need about 20 30 minutes of exercise daily. High-energy Havaneses may need more vigorous activity, such as a long run or hike. On the other hand, lower energy dogs may benefit more from lower intensity activities such as leisurely walks.
Generally speaking, Havaneses are very friendly and sociable breeds of dog. They usually get along well with other pets, including cats, birds, and small mammals. However, like any other dog breed, there are some individuals that may not be comfortable interacting or living with other animals. In general, Havaneses tend to prefer the company of humans rather than other pets. Also, since they were bred to be companion animals, they tend to do well living in a household with other pets, so long as the interactions between them are closely monitored and controlled.
Havaneses are often regarded as some of the smartest dog breeds. This is due to their inquisitive and friendly demeanor, as well as their eagerness to learn and retain new skills. Their intelligence is often evidenced by their ability to quickly recognize and obey commands, as well as their capacity to remember both people and places that they visit. Havaneses tend to be more sociable and develop relationships quickly, making them naturally inclined to be loyal and dependable. Havaneses also have an impressive aptitude for problem solving and can even learn how to do basic tricks.
