Questions & Answers
A Havanese is a type of dog that is small and often referred to as a "velcro" because of their closeness and attachment to their owners. They are an intelligent and playful breed, exuding a sense of joy and unconditional love. They are friendly to both people and other animals and love to be active, playing with their owners, learning new tricks and exploring the world around them. Although they are alert and clever, they need to be taught basic behavioral skills and good manners to thrive and become the ideal companion.
Havaneses can be considered hypoallergenic dogs, as they do not have an undercoat and usually do not shed much. So allergens in the air can be brought about by other animals, not Havaneses. Of course, this doesn't mean that individuals who may suffer allergic reactions will not have any reaction to a Havaneses. It is always best for someone with allergies to take the time to meet and spend some time with any breed of dog beforehand if possible, to determine their individual allergic reaction.
Since Havaneses have small mouths and throats, they are prone to choking and should not be given anything that is too hard, large, or sharp, such as rawhide, large pieces of meat, or bones. Additionally, it's important to avoid small, hard items such as popcorn, nuts, and seeds. It's best to provide your Havaneses with healthy, easily digestible fresh foods such as cooked vegetables, fruits, and proteins.
Before getting a Havanese, you should buy dog food specially formulated for small breeds, a collar with an ID tag, a good quality leash, a secure place to keep the Havanese when he is not supervised, a bed or crate, chew toys and other necessary supplies like a brush, shampoo and nail clippers. You may also want to get shampoo for fleas and ticks, a brush, chew-deterrent spray, chew toys, and a selection of treats for training.
Your Havanese puppy can range in size from 8-11 inches tall and weigh between 7-13 pounds when fully grown. The size of your puppy will depend on a few factors, including the size of the parents and the nutrition it receives. It's important for you to speak with your breeder to get a more specific estimate of the size your pup may reach. Since proper nutrition plays a key role in size, it's important to seek advice from your veterinarian about giving your puppy the proper diet it needs to maximize its growth potential.
Generally speaking, Havaneses do enjoy going for swims in pools and other areas of water. This is due to their natural predisposition towards swimming which belongs to their heritage as a breed. Owners will often find their Havaneses using their strong, playful strokes to splash around when given the opportunity. That said, not all Havaneses will take to the water with the same level of enthusiasm. Some will simply enjoy standing in the shallow parts of the pool or wading around in the shallows.
Havaneses are an excellent choice for first-time owners! Generally friendly and loving to their owners, Havaneses are intelligent and eager to please, making them easily trainable. They are more active than some other breeds, but not overly so, and are low-maintenance, needing only an occasional bath and grooming. They can easily adapt to small living quarters or apartments without a yard, and they are friendly and social, getting along well with children, other dogs, and even cats.
Training your Havanese pup is all about consistency and positive reinforcement. Start with basic obedience and don't forget to reward your pup with praise and treats when they do good. Teaching simple commands like "sit," "stay," and "come" can be a great way to get started. Socialization should also be a prioritytaking your pup for regular walks, introducing them to other dogs, and setting apart time for play and companionship can be a great foundation for building stable behaviors. Spend time each day working with your pup on basic commands and behaviors, and make sure to set boundaries.
