Questions & Answers
A Havanese is a small, intelligent breed of dog that originates from Cuba. It is a member of the Bichon family of breeds and is sometimes referred to as the Bichon Havanais. It is known for its silky, cottony coat, which may be solid, parti, or tricolored. The Havanese is small in size, standing no taller than 9.5 inches and weighing between 7-13 lbs. They are also very smart and easy to train, making them a great family pet.
The Havanese coat is characterized by its soft and long single-layer coat which is referred to as a ‘puppy-coat’ because of its velvety texture. It ranges from a silky, lightweight texture to a denser but still soft and wavy coat. The coat of this breed is traditionally white or cream-colored, although it can also come in colors like gold, black, brown and blue. The hair of the Havanese can also come in any shade of long, curly locks.
Havaneses, as with any breed of dog, have dietary needs dependent on their individual lifestyle and health status. Generally speaking, Havaneses require a high-quality, balanced diet full of natural ingredients, packed with essential vitamins and nutrients to maintain an optimal weight and overall health. They have a higher metabolism rate that needs to be met with adequate amounts of higher protein, fat and carbohydrates. Additionally, they may require specific supplements for joint, heart, or dental health. This special attention to dietary and health needs is what makes them a great companion and ensures a long, happy life.
Preparing your home for a Havanese is relatively straightforward. First, create a safe space that is all its own. This can be a crate or a playpen. Make sure it has soft bedding and toys that the Havanese will enjoy. Provide the necessary supplies like food, water, grooming items, and other health care items like flea and tick medication. If possible, aim to puppy-proof your home by putting away items the puppy could chew on and potentially harm themselves with.
Havaneses are not typically thought of as "big" dogs, despite their outgoing personalities and natural flair for showmanship. They are, however, quite sturdy and have been known to be both alert and obedient. The Havaneses' average size is around 17 to 20 inches height when they are fully grown, and they usually weigh only about 7 to 13 pounds. They may look small compared to other breeds of dogs, but they are full of personality and energy, making them challenging and a great companion.
While it is possible to take your Havanese running, it is important to consider your pet's health and safety first. Due to the small size of the Havanese, you should never put excessively long distances or high-intensity running on this breed, as their bones are relatively delicate and their muscles can easily become strained. If you do decide to take your Havanese running, make sure to start with short distances and gradually increase the amount, as well as listening for signs of exhaustion, such as heavy panting or limping.
Havanese are wonderful family dogs! They exhibit loyalty, curiosity, intelligence, and an eagerness to please their families. They are caring and affectionate companions that strive to be close to their owners and enjoy playing with them. Havanese are known for being social dogs that do great both in and out of the home. They are highly trainable and respond well to positive reinforcement. They are happy dogs and, with their constant companionship and gentle personalities, make wonderful additions to any family. Havanese also do best in households with a regular routine as they enjoy structure and consistency.
The amount of daily training minutes required for a Havanese depends on a few factors. If the Havanese is young, the training time should be longer due to the pup's shorter attention span. If your Havanese has been trained before, the training time can be cut back slightly. If you are teaching the Havanese new behaviors, then you should be allocating more time for the training.
