Questions & Answers
One of the most interesting things about Havaneses is their versatility. Despite being small in stature, Havaneses can take on a variety of roles and activities. Whether it's taking on an active watchdog role or simply being a companion animal, Havaneses can excel in many different activities and excel at providing companionship to their owners. They are also incredibly intelligent animals, capable of learning a variety of commands and activities due to their quick thinking. Unlike many other breeds, Havaneses don't require much exercise and can happily live in small quarters.
While many breeds of dogs can be deemed hypoallergenic, the Havaneses is not explicitly included in that list. While Havaneses may produce less dander than other breeds, the amount of dander they produce depends on their individual genetics. As such, it is not a guarantee that all psuedo-hypoallergenic Havaneses will not provoke allergic reactions. Ultimately, the only way to determine if a Havaneses is hypoallergenic to you is to spend time around the breed in person to see if you have any symptoms or allergic reactions.
You should not feed your Havaneses human food such as burgers, processed meats, chocolate, sweets, and baked goods. These types of foods are not good for their health. Instead, feed them high-quality dog food specifically designed for their size and age. Make sure the food you purchase is high in protein as this will be the main energy source for your Havaneses and they need a balanced diet to stay healthy. Avoid giving them table scraps, foods containing preservatives, and products that contain excessive amounts of carbohydrates and/or sugar.
Before bringing home a Havanese, there are several items that you should have. First, you will need a durable collar and leash, proper dog food and bowls, a soft bed, plenty of safe chew toys, a brush, and any necessary medications. Additionally, it's important to puppy-proof your home by making sure outlets are covered and windows are secure. That way, your Havanese can safely explore its environment without internalizing any dangerous habits. Finally, it's beneficial to enroll in obedience classes to teach your pup how to listen and respond to commands.
While Havaneses are small dogs, they are considered to be large in comparison to their counterparts. At an average weight of 7-15 lbs and a height of 8-11 inches, they are bigger than dogs like the Chihuahua, and just a bit smaller than breeds like the Yorkshire Terrier. So while they may not fit the stereotype of an "American-style" large dog, such as a Great Dane, they are still relatively big for their size.
Generally, a Havanese should be walked for at least 30 minutes per day. During these walks, you'll want to encourage your pup to stay active by walking briskly, ideally in multiple environments. You can even take the time to let your pup explore, but make sure to keep them on a leash. You may also consider going on longer walks of 45 minutes to an hour on days where your pup has extra energy and staying inside for a few days if your Havanese is feeling less than mighty.
Generally speaking, Havaneses have an excellent temperament which is why they tend to do very well with kids. They are a playful and intelligent breed that loves to spend time with people, and especially with kids. Havaneses are known to have a strong bond with their members of family, which means they will respond to your children as if they were part of their own family. They are gentle and loving and can show great patience when it comes to kids that want to play with them. All in all, Havaneses usually have great relationships with kids.
The amount of minutes per day that you should dedicate to training your Havaneses will vary from one to the next depending on a range of factors. Generally, two to three 10-minute training sessions should suffice, as these smaller chunks tend to be better for long-term training and behavior modification. However, if your Havaneses is highly active, you may need to allot more minutes up to 15 or even 20 minutes if needed to prevent boredom and destructive behaviors.
