Questions & Answers
The most interesting thing about Havaneses is that they are a designer breed, the result of a cross between the Havanese and the Bichon Frise. This infusion of heritage has given them a unique and delightful combination of traits. They are incredibly social, sociable, and attentive, and they bond strongly to their owners. They have a playful, goofy, and active energy, but can also be calm and laid-back when asked. Perhaps best of all, they love to go on walks, and if properly trained, they make excellent companions on hikes and other outdoor activities.
Allergic reactions to pets can vary greatly; there is no definite answer to whether owning a Havanese will inevitably trigger allergy symptoms. Allergies to pets are most commonly triggered by proteins in saliva, urine, and dander; however, the level of sensitivities can vary significantly between different people. It may be possible to limit your exposure to those triggers by regular grooming, bathing, and vacuuming, and avoiding contact with areas on the pet which generate saliva and urine, such as their face and fur around the legs.
Feeding your Havanese a nutritious diet is the best way to keep it healthy. High-quality dry kibble formulated for small dogs is optimal, as it contains the proper nutrients for their size and activity level. You could also consider adding canned food as an occasional treat or mixing it into their kibble to give them a delicious variety. In addition to their dry and/or canned food, it can be beneficial to give your Havanese omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil and a probiotic supplement to support their immune system and digestion.
To help prepare your home for your new Havanese, start by making sure you have the necessities like toys, a bed, food and water bowls, and a crate. Create a safe, comfortable environment for your pet by blocking off any stairways or dangerous areas and keeping household chemicals, medications, and dangerous items away and out of reach. Make sure to set aside quality time to socialize and train your pup, as Havanese are quite intelligent and eager to please.
Yes, Havaneses are considered small dogs. They usually stand around 9-11 inches in height and weigh around 6-9 pounds when fully grown. They have a long coat with an abundance of wavy curls and often have a fringe of long bangs that drapes over their eyes. They are well proportioned, with a deep chest and short legs. Havaneses are bright and intelligent, and are often quite easy to train. They make wonderful companions and have been known to bond closely to their owners, making them suitable with people of all ages.
The amount of time you should spend walking your Havanese each day depends on a few factors, such as your pup’s age and activity level. Generally, a Havanese should get at least 30 minutes of exercise daily, preferably split up into two 15 minute walks, plus playtime and additional outings. If your pup is younger and/or highly active, he may require more than 30 minutes of exercise per day. As with all dogs, your Havanese needs to venture outside for walks for regular breaks to stay healthy and act as an emotional release.
Yes, Havaneses get along very well with kids. Their outgoing and friendly nature makes them great companions for children of all ages. They are intelligent, patient and gentle enough to allow kids to learn and explore while playing with them. Havaneses usually take direction well from adults, so they are able to listen to commands and guidance from adults while still having a good time playing with the kids. They are also great watchdogs, as they will usually bark to alert their family of potential danger.
The amount of time you need to dedicate to training your Havanese per day will depend on the age and individual needs of your pet. As a general rule, active and playful puppies will need more exercise than adult dogs. In these cases, daily play sessions or short walks should last between 30-60 minutes each day. For adult Havanese, a daily walk of at least 20 minutes will usually suffice but longer walks, such as a few times a week, can provide major physical and mental health benefits.
