Questions & Answers
Havaneses are an intelligent breed of dogs that originated in Cuba as a blend of various different breeds. They have a happy and friendly disposition, and many enjoy the company of other animals and people. One of the most fun facts about Havaneses is their thick woolly coat. This coat can range in color from white to chocolate, and can also comes in variations including black and parti-colors. Havaneses are known for being great watchdogs as they bark to alert the owners of potentially unfamiliar visitors.
The Havanese coat is quite unique among breeds. It is a hypoallergenic, single-layer coat, meaning it has one layer of fur rather than the two or three layers in some heavier-coated breeds. The outer coat is wavy or curly, often guard hairs, and the coat is very soft and silky. Some may also have a longer, softer coat. In the traditional show coat, the fur stands off from the body and is long in the front, along the sides of the face, and on the back of the legs.
Havaneses typically eat a balanced diet that includes healthy proteins, fruits and vegetables, and whole grains. Protein sources are usually fish and poultry, with small amounts of beef occasionally added in. Milk, cheese, and yogurt also provide important nutrients. Fruits and vegetables provide vitamins and minerals, along with important dietary fiber. Whole grains such as rice, oats, and quinoa are also good sources of complex carbohydrates for energy. Treats and specialty foods can be given in moderation, but their primary diet should be nutrition-rich whole foods.
To become an exemplary puppy parent for your Havanese, there are many things you can do to ensure your pup grows to be healthy and happy. Provide your pup with a stimulating environment with regular walks and exercise, plenty of playtime and social interactions with you and other family members, and healthy food and treats. Additionally, it is important to set rules and boundaries for your pup so that they understand what is expected of them and can adjust to your family's lifestyle.
Havaneses reach an average height of around 9-11 inches when fully grown. They have a lifespan of up to 14 years and usually weigh around 7-13 pounds. Size-wise, they tend to be quite small, yet do feature a slightly robust body type. With proper care, your Havaneses will remain vibrant and healthy in size for the entirety of their lives. They will obviously not grow any taller as they reach full maturity. However, they may gain a few extra pounds as they age, allowing for a fuller, denser coat of fur.
The amount of exercise your Havanese needs depends on their age, general health, and fitness level. A healthy adult Havanese should get at least 30 minutes of moderately-paced activity every day, usually consisting of a brisk walk or some other activity that gets their heart rate up. However, more is always better, so if you can fit in 45-50 minutes per day, your Havanese will be much happier and healthier. Be aware that some days are more strenuous than others, and you should adjust your Havanese's walk accordingly.
Yes, Havaneses get along with kids very well. They are intelligent and learn quickly, and tend to be affectionate and gentle which makes them great playmates and companions for children. The breed is known for being people and kid-friendly, so long as the kids are well-mannered and respectful. Socializing and obedience training from a young age is beneficial and can help the Havaneses transition into the household easier. As with any breed, they should be supervised to prevent any kind of nipping or accident that might occur with smaller children.
Training your Havaneses is an important part of maintaining their obedience and overall health. It's important to keep in mind that the amount of minutes you should spend training them depends on their age, mental state, and ability level. Generally speaking, you should be aiming for about 15-20 minutes of training per day, although some Havaneses may require more time. You should also make sure to give them plenty of positive reinforcement while training, as well as attend to their needs as they come up.
