Questions & Answers
Havaneses are a small, lovable toy breed originating in Cuba. They are often referred to as Bichon Havaneses and have long, silky coats that come in a variety of colors. Havaneses are very agile and typically friendly dogs with a loving nature. They make great lap dogs as well as very loyal and affectionate companions that produce minimal amounts of shedding. Havaneses are quite intelligent and require regular training and positive reinforcement to help bring out their best traits. Despite their small size, they have an adventurous streak and will enjoy exploring their environments.
While Havaneses are not generally thought of as a hypoallergenic breed, they may be a good choice for those with allergies. Havaneses don't shed much due to their long, curly coat, and are often considered a low-shedding breed. They also produce less dander than some other breeds. That being said, it's important to note that no breed is truly hypoallergenic. There’s no guarantee that even the lowest-shedding pup won’t cause an allergic reaction.
Havaneses are small to medium-sized, companion dogs and they have a diet that is tailored directly to their needs. As with all other breeds, they should be fed nutrient-dense, high-quality dog food. Spot and Tango provide a specialized food that contains pre-portioned servings that provide a balanced Omega fatty acid profile rich in glucosamine and chondroitin for improved joint health. In addition to the quality of the food, the amount of food you serve your Havaneses is important.
To ensure a successful transition for you and your new Havanese, it is important to consider both your dog's environment and lifestyle. The first step in preparing for your new addition is to create a comfortable and safe home. This includes having the necessary furniture such as a bed, food bowl, and toys as well as familiarizing yourself with important topics like housebreaking and crate training. Additionally, you should research proper nutrition for the breed, local training classes, and even local animal hospitals and vets.
Havaneses are a breed of toy dogs, usually weighing between 6-15 pounds when fully grown. They are commonly referred to as the perfect blend of a toy dog, combining a short and compact body with a large-sized heart. On average, they will reach a height of 9-11 inches at the withers (the highest point of a dog's shoulder blades) and a body length of up to 14 inches. Naturally, due to their size, these dogs make excellent companion animals for small living spaces since they require little exercise.
Havaneses are an active breed and need daily exercise to stay fit and happy. Depending on the individual's age and health condition, the need for exercise may vary, but generally, Havaneses need a minimum of an hour of moderate exercise every day. This could be a combination of walks and playtime jumping, running, and exploring. It's important to keep in mind that, despite being rather small in size, these dogs still have high energy levels and need adequate stimulation. Make sure to plan activities that keep Havaneses mentally and physically fit.
Havaneses typically get along very well with other pets, such as cats and other dogs. They tend to be friendly, outgoing, and energetic, making them an excellent match for any other animal in your home. Though they may have their own unique preferences, Havaneses usually approach other animals with a natural curiosity and willingness to learn. They often utilize their intelligence and resourcefulness to earn the trust and respect of other pets, allowing them to become an integral part of the family.
Training a Havanese may not be the easiest task, depending upon each individual pet's learning process and attitude. Different dogs learn at different speeds, so it's important to recognize and adjust to these differences. With patience and consistency, it is certainly possible to teach a Havanese new behaviors. To do so, it is important to understand how to make training sessions fun and keep them enjoyable for your pup. Utilizing rewards and positive reinforcement goes a long way in helping your pup learn quickly and effectively.
