Questions & Answers
A Havanese is a small breed of domestic dog originating in Cuba. It is the national dog of the country and is known for its attractive white coat and distinctive topknot. These playful and affectionate dogs make great companions for people of all ages. Havanese weigh an average of 7-13 pounds with a shoulder height of 8-11 inches. They have a single, silky-smooth, long coat which comes in a variety of colors, including cream, white, gold, silver, blue, black and a mix of colors.
Havaneses are wise and smart dogs who rarely shed. While they do have some hair that comes out, it's usually very minimal. Generally speaking these dogs are considered hypoallergenic and non-shedding. They do not require much grooming and they do not create much of a mess around the house. Brushing their coat weekly is required to keep their coat silky and mat-free. In terms of coat care, Havaneses require some occasional trips to the groomer for trimming, as their coat needs to be kept from becoming too long.
Generally speaking, Havaneses have the same dietary needs as most other breeds of dog. That said, some Havaneses can be a bit picky eaters and may require a special diet to maintain optimal nutrition and health. For instance, Havaneses can be prone to allergies or sensitivities to certain foods, which could necessitate a hypoallergenic or grain-free diet.
Before taking home a Havanese, there are some items that you will need to purchase to ensure they have the best possible life. Essential items range from crates and carriers, to food, water and food dishes, to grooming products, to puppy pads, to chew toys and treats for proper teething. You will also need to acquire comfortable bedding or cuddly toys, acceptable chew toys, a collar and leash for walks, an ID tag, and most importantly, a complete check-up from a qualified vet to confirm the health of your new Havanese.
Havanese puppies typically grow to be small dogs, with an average shoulder height of 8.5 to 11.5 inches and an average weight of seven to 13 pounds. However, individual puppy size can vary greatly, with some growing much larger. Factors like the puppy's parents' size, nutrition, and activity level can all affect the overall size of your Havanese. Your puppy's size may not be fully determined until they are more than one year old.
It is possible for you to take your Havanese running, although it may not be the best exercise option for them. Havanese are primarily companion dogs, and they were bred as such with an intent to love and to be loved and not to participate in vigorous workouts. Because of their size, running will put quite a bit of stress on their joints and body, which can lead to issues down the line. While it's possible to take them running, there are safer and better exercises you can do with your Havanese that will be more suitable to their size and pedigree.
Havaneses make wonderful family dogs. They are known for their outgoing personalities and loving nature. They love to cuddle and bond closely with their owners, making them the perfect companion. They respond exceptionally well to positive reinforcement, making them highly trainable and reliable. They are extremely intelligent and are easily adaptable for different lifestyles and situations. They are also usually good with children, as they are small, playful, and affectionate. Furthermore, they have minimal grooming needs and their low-shedding coats make them perfect for those who are allergic or sensitive to pet dander.
Training your Havanese requires time, patience, and consistency. It's important to understand that Havanese can be stubborn, so you need to be firm and consistent when teaching new things. Start by teaching basic commands such as sit, stay, down, etc. and use positive reinforcement to reward them for following your commands. Be sure to make the training fun and give your pup lots of treats and praise. As your pup progresses, gradually increase the difficulty of the commands. You'll also need to work on housebreaking and socialization skills, as well as obedience training exercises.
