Questions & Answers
Havaneses are a breed of small companion dogs originating from Havana, Cuba. They are lively, intelligent and friendly, and are known for their warm and playful demeanor. Havaneses are often referred to as a “Boo” breed due to their resemblance to teddy bears. This breed was once nearly nonexistent outside of Cuba, but has since become a popular pet in many countries. One fun Havaneses fact is that, due to their natural friendliness, they are often preferred by owners looking for smaller dogs that are not prone to aggressive outbursts.
Managing allergies with Havaneses is largely dependent on understanding the triggers of your symptoms. Start by getting a detailed medical diagnosis and determine which substances or allergens cause your allergies. If you have been prescribed allergy medication, it is important to follow your doctor’s instructions and keep your medications up to date. Reducing exposure to your triggers is also important; this may include using home or car air filters, avoiding certain foods, and limiting contact with animals.
Your Havanese will need a high-quality diet tailored to its breed size, age, and activity level. Look for a food that is species-appropriate and contains real animal ingredients as the main source of protein. However, different Havanese have different nutritional needs, so it's best to consult with a vet regarding the best dietary options for your pup to ensure their nutritional needs are met. If opting for dry kibble, look for a food designed for small breed dogs with optimal levels of calcium, copper, and phosphorus.
Havanese requirements are relatively minimal compared to other breeds. Aside from their typical demands for regular exercise, grooming and mental stimulation, Havanese need to be provided with an adequate diet to ensure their health and well-being. They have a strong tendency to gain weight, so portion control and nutritional maintenance is key. The breed also has a love for being in a social environment, so a regular dose of companionship and interaction with familiar people is also necessary.
On average, Havaneses tend to reach a size of about 8-11 inches when fully grown and they normally weigh between 7 and 13 pounds. The breed does contain a variation of sizes ranging from 6-12 inches in height and between 4-20 pounds in weight, although anything outside of the average size range would be considered atypical for a Havaneses. Interestingly enough, adult Havaneses do not appear to grow much after their first year of life.
Generally speaking, Havaneses enjoy swimming, as it is a fun and rewarding way to stay active. Not to mention, having a pool gives these energetic canines an opportunity to socialize with humans and other pets. Swimming can provide dogs of any size an admirable outlet for exercise without the high impact stresses that accompany running, which can be especially helpful for older dogs.
Havaneses can make great first-time pets for those who are looking for a small, loyal, and affectionate companion. This spunky little breed is full of energy and can provide tremendous joy to their new families. With a proper balance of exercise, playtime, and good training, Havaneses are typically very easy companions. They're intelligent, sensitive, and love to be around their people. If taken care of properly, a Havaneses can make a great first-time pet and a lifetime companion.
Training a Havanese requires a different approach than most other breeds. Generally speaking, a Havanese puppy should get mental stimulation from training sessions that are around 10 minutes long each day during their first few months. As the puppy matures into an adult, you can then slowly increase the frequency and duration of each session. Aim for at least 15 minutes a day of mental stimulation, preferably broken into two or three smaller sessions. Also, it's important to have your Havanese practice all their learned behaviors at least once a week.
