Questions & Answers
Havaneses are historically known as a companion dog, located in the Bichon family. One interesting fun fact is that Havaneses were originally bred to be large for a lap dog, so they could interact with nobility. This created the modern, smaller breed we know today. Another fun fact is that Havaneses are the only non-sporting toy breed that was bred to be a guard dog. Their unique coat is soft and thick, featuring long, wooly hair which should be trimmed and groomed monthly.
Generally, Havaneses can be considered hypoallergenic. This is because they are a non-shedding breed of dogs, meaning they have less fur and dander than most other dogs, and as a result trigger fewer allergies in people. They also have a silky, fluffy coat that is easy to keep clean. In addition, Havaneses have very low grooming needs, making them an ideal pet for those who suffer from allergies or asthma.
Havaneses can generally have the same diets as any other dog. They should be fed a high-quality dry dog food, with plenty of protein and fat and limited carb content. It is important to avoid added sugar and fillers and other ingredients their digestive systems may not be able to absorb. Some Havaneses may have food allergies or sensitivities that require them to have a limited-ingredient diet. It is also recommended that Havaneses get an extra boost of proteins and vitamins from cooked or raw meats a few times a week.
Havanese are a low-maintenance breed, but they do require certain standards to maintain their health and happiness. Primarily, they need plenty of exercise and mental stimulation; although they are a small breed, they have boundless energy and benefit from activities like leash training, agility training, or playing fetch. Grooming is a necessity for the breed, as their hair is long and wavy, so it is important to brush them regularly to keep it tangle free and manage shedding.
Havaneses are considered small dogs, although they vary in size. Generally, they typically range in size from 6 to 12 inches tall and weigh between 7 and 13 pounds. Because of their small size, they are considered a fairly portable breed and are also very adaptable to smaller apartments and houses. They are known for their round and mop-like head that is usually complemented with droopy ears that are accented by their long topknot and silky coat. This breed is also known to have a strong loyalty to its owners, making it a great companion pet.
Havaneses are naturally active, so they need plenty of exercise to stay physically and mentally healthy. Running, walking, and playing with toys are ideal activities to give them the exercise they need. Despite their smaller size, they still need to have a good 30-minute walk or jog to stretch their legs each day. Additionally, making sure they get a good mix of activities like going to the park to play fetch or engaging in doggy play dates with other nearby pups are great ways to help meet their exercise needs.
Generally, Havaneses are very good natured and tend to get along well with kids. They are pleasantly playful and known for their intelligence, so they can learn and pick up on cues from children quickly. Havaneses are known as "velcro" dogs, meaning they enjoy being close and cuddling up with their human companions, including kids. While they may bark at other dogs and children when excited, they become more comfortable when given time to adjust to their new environment.
Training a Havanese can take some time and patience, but for many pet parents, this breed has proven to be relatively easy to train. With their higher intelligence, Havanese generally learn quickly and respond well to positive reinforcement. Repetition and consistency are also important when it comes to training a Havanese. This means that the same commands should be used every time and rewards should be given immediately after the commands are carried out. Additionally, socialization is key in order to make sure your Havanese is comfortable in a variety of situations it may face.
