Questions & Answers
Havaneses are a toy breed of dog that belong to the Bichon family of dogs. They possess both the traits of a Bichon and a Poodle, resulting in an extremely friendly, loyal, alert, and intelligent companion. Their size is typically about 7 to 12 pounds, and their coats are soft, wavy, and medium to long in length. Moreover, they often come in shades of white, cream, gold, and black. As far as temperament goes, they are eager to please and love the company of humans.
Yes, Havaneses are non-shedding dogs. As a breed they are known for their great ability to stay relatively clean and keep low shedding in comparison to their fellow canine counterparts. On average, they tend not to produce as much dander or fur that requires consistent brushing and maintenance. While they may still require regular trimming, these small dogs boast a great advantage for owners who do not want the constant maintenance of cleaning fur from furniture and clothing. Additionally, Havaneses are great for people with allergies because they don't pose as much of an issue.
Although this breed is known to be relatively 'easy-going' when it comes to food, it is important to remember that they need a highly-nutritious diet that is tailored to their age and activity level to ensure their wellbeing. Avoid feeding Havaneses (or other pet dogs) any sort of human food such as chocolate, onions, grapes, and raisins, as they can be toxic to your dog’s health. Also, avoid feeding them bones, which can easily splinter and create intestinal blockages.
To get ready for your new Havanese, it's important to engage in some home preparation. Make sure you have the essentials, such as a designated area for food, water, and potty breaks; a safe place for your pup to sleep, such as a dog bed, kennel, or crate (depending on your preference); collar and leash with your pup's ID tags; and of course, lots of toys and chews! In addition, ensure that electrical and other hazards in your home have been addressed.
Havaneses, sometimes known as the 'Havanese Cuban Bichon', are small and cheerful dogs that are part of the Bichon family. They usually grow to a height of 8 to 11 inches and a weight of up to 13 pounds, making them one of the smallest breeds in the world. Although they can remain active and energetic all the way into their older years, they do not suffer from the size-related joint issues that are common in many larger breeds. Thanks to their small and manageable size, Havaneses make excellent family pets and can be easily trained.
Generally speaking, most Havaneses enjoy swimming! With their history of being bred to retrieve items from water, many Havaneses are born swimmers and can be seen diving into the waves. Even after all these years, Havaneses show a natural instinct when it comes to swimming and love to splash around in the pool or lake. All this swimming can turn into some pretty enjoyable and active outdoor exercise, making it the perfect activity for your Havaneses to partake in. Swimming also strengthens a Havaneses' muscles, increases their endurance, and helps to maintain a healthy weight.
Generally speaking, Havaneses get along great with kids! They are known for being very patient, gentle, and loving with children. They have a friendly personality, and they thrive on human interaction and affection, so they tend to easily bond with children who also enjoy interacting with them. Typical behaviors of Havaneses are also well-suited to interacting with children, such as not being overly loud or aggressive and playing fetch are some of the activities that they enjoy doing together.
Training a Havanese is based upon an understanding of the dog's personality, which is alert, loyal and intelligent. Positive reinforcement is the best way to train any dog, including the Havanese. Keep training sessions brief, interesting and stimulating, using rewards such as treats, verbal praise or interactive playtime. Start with simple commands like "sit," "stay" and "come" and build up in difficulty. Socialization is also important, so start taking your Havanese out early, introducing them to a variety of people and places.
