Questions & Answers
Havaneses are a small companion dog originating from Cuba and are a member of the Bichon family. They are outgoing and gentle, and they make great family pets for people of all ages. Their long, silky coat is usually white with splashes of black, light blue and tan. They are typically 12-14 inches tall, with a weight of 7-13 pounds. They are alert, active and eager to please, making them highly trainable and alert enough for guard dogs. They can also excel in various types of performance events such as agility, obedience and playing fetch.
The Havanese has a beautiful and distinctive double coat. The upper coat is a thick, long, wavy, and slightly curly hair that often feels soft and silky. The lower layer of the coat is a short, soft, woolly undercoat. It is usually a light to dark cream, gray, brown, or black color. The fur around its neck, chest, and hips is longer and sometimes slightly curly or wavy. The Havanese also has long ears that hang down each side of the head and full, flowing tail.
Havanese dogs thrive on a balanced diet that is high in protein, moderate in fat, and low in carbohydrates. An optimal diet for a Havanese should contain real meat that can be supplemented with other fresh produce, such as eggs, vegetables, and grains. Feeding them quality, grain-free kibbles is the best way to make sure they're getting the nutrients they need. You should also provide plenty of clean, fresh water throughout the day, no matter how much they're eating. Variety is the key with providing a healthy diet for your Havanese.
Before bringing your new Havanese home, it's important to prepare your home for its arrival. Firstly, assess the area to ensure that it is safe. Pick up or secure any objects like cables or plants that might be hazardous to your new family member. Secondly, designate an area for your pup to sleep with comfortable bedding and toys to keep it occupied. Thirdly, identify areas in your home that will be off limits; you may need to restrict access to certain rooms or items, such as the pantry.
Although Havaneses may appear to be large in size, they are actually classified as a small to medium breed of dog. The average Havaneses stands at only 8-11 inches at the shoulder and can weigh anywhere between 6-12 pounds. So, compared to the much larger Great Danes, Labrador Retrievers, or Bullmastiffs, the Havaneses is definitely considered to be a small-medium sized dog. Despite their smaller appearance, Havaneses can make great family pets.
Havaneses, just like most breeds of dogs, require a daily outlet for their energy. The amount of exercise needed will vary depending on the individual, but generally speaking, Havaneses need at least an hour of activity per day, such as walks, chasing tennis balls, playing tug-of-war, and other activities that will give them both physical and mental stimulation. If you cannot provide each day with at least an hour of physical activity, it is recommended to try and provide two shorter daily routines in order to keep your Havaneses healthy and happy.
Havaneses make great pets for first-time owners. They have an intelligent and playful personality, and they need minimal grooming which makes them ideal for busy people. They are friendly and, while lively, they don't require a lot of exercise. Havaneses also have an affinity for the human race meaning that they'll bond easily with their owners and make a great companion. They don't bark too much and are easy to train, and their medium size means they can be housed in small apartments. All this makes the Havaneses a great choice for first-time dog owners.
Havaneses are intelligent dogs with an innate ability to quickly learn. Studies have shown that these dogs excel at obedience training, and they're often seen in agility competitions. Thanks to their intelligence, they're relatively easy to train and they become devoted to their owners. They're often described as loving, loyal, and sensitive, and they're very quick to pick up commands, making them a great addition to any pet-owning family. Their trainability and intelligence also makes them perfect for therapy and assistance work.
