Questions & Answers
Havaneses are known for being one of the most loyal breeds of dog. Originally bred to be lap dogs for the upper class ladies of Havana, Cuba, the Havaneses has become a popular companion dog all around the world. Another fun fact about Havaneses is that they have an average lifespan of 14-18 years, making them a great choice for anyone looking for a long-term furry family member. Havaneses are very affectionate and intelligent, so they may excel in activities like agility and obedience training.
Havaneses are considered non-shedding dogs due to their short coat. This type of coat generally will not require brushing or grooming to keep its sleek, soft texture, nor does it have an undercoat that needs to be removed. In addition, this breed does not produce an excessive amount of dander or oils which cause all-ergenic reactions to some people. That being said, Havaneses may still drop light amounts of fur or hair around the home, but this is usually very minimal.
It is important to properly research the diet needs of your specific breed of Havaneses before determining what is and is not safe for them to consume. Generally speaking, Havaneses should not be fed human food as things like carrots, potatoes, and onions can be harmful and lead to indigestion. It is also imperative to avoid giving them any bones as these can potentially splinter and cause choking. While some types of table scraps may be okay, if it is rich, processed, or fatty, it should be avoided at all costs.
Preparing for a new Havanese involves more than just purchasing supplies. Before bringing your pup home, you should research the breed to ensure you can provide the right environment and care that is specific to the Havanese. Secure your living areas with pet gates and secure poisonous items, such as electrical cords or plants, that may harm your pet. Have food, dishes, bedding, treats, toys, and other necessary items in place for when your pet arrives. Additionally, plan potty training and socialization activities in advance.
Havaneses are small dogs who typically grow to between 7-12 pounds and no taller than 13 inches at the shoulder. This makes them the perfect lapdog and a great companion for smaller spaces, as they don't take up much room; yet, Havaneses make an excellent watchdog. Despite their size, they have plenty of energy and require moderate exercise, such as short walks and play sessions.
Havaneses are a highly active breed of dog and they need plenty of exercise in order to stay healthy and fit. An average Havanese needs a minimum of 20-30 minutes of physical activity 2-3 times per day. Of course, the exact amount of exercise they need depends on their age and overall health. Generally speaking, you should aim for at least 2 daily walks and some additional activities like jogging, playing fetch, or swimming. Keep in mind that it's important to make sure your Havanese is getting the right type of exercise for its size and physical condition.
Havaneses are famously friendly and energetic dogs, and they typically get along with kids very well. These family-oriented dogs thrive in environments filled with activity, and are known to be great companions for children. As long as they are socialized early, Havaneses can adjust to a variety of children's temperaments while also displaying their own playful and affectionate behaviors. They love spending time with people, including kids, and usually enjoy being around them and taking part in their games.
Training your Havanese will require time, patience, and consistency. Start by familiarizing your pet with basic commands, such as “Come”, “Sit”, and “Stay”. When using these commands, use the same words, the same tones, and the same body language each time. Positive reinforcement in the form of treats or a favorite toy can help reinforce the command. As your pet learns the command, practice it often and reward it with plenty of praise.
