Questions & Answers
Havaneses are a toy breed of dog from the Bichon family that originated in Havana, Cuba. They are small dogs, with a typically sweet, affectionate, and loyal personality. Havaneses are easy to recognize due to their characteristic shaggy, white coats. They have a sturdy, muscular build, yet remain fairly light, which makes them ideal as lapdogs. In terms of size, Havaneses typically stand at around 8 to 11 inches at the shoulder and weigh around 7 to 13 pounds.
Havaneses, like other dogs with long, flowing coats, have the potential to aggravate allergies since they have more hair and dander than shorter-haired dogs. However, Havaneses are considered to be less likely to irritate sensitive sinuses and skin than other long-haired breeds. This is because they have a "silky, wavy" coat as opposed to fuzzy or wooly hair, producing less dander. Additionally, Havaneses' coats do not shed much, and if properly groomed, there are far less dead hairs on floors and furniture.
Feeding your Havaneses anything outside of their normal diet should be avoided. Unbalanced nutrition can cause unhealthy weight gain, digestion issues, and other serious health risks. When it comes to treats, some of the foods to avoid are onion, garlic, grapes, raisins, chocolate, xylitol, corn, and bread dough. Other foods unsuitable for Havaneses include raw eggs and meat, fatty and fried foods, and foods high in carbohydrates. Artificial sweeteners like sorbitol or mannitol are also not recommended.
Becoming a pet parent of a Havanese is a big responsibility, and it's important to prepare as much as possible before you bring your new pup home. Research a good veterinarian in the area and make sure to make an initial appointment with them to discuss everything from health care to nutrition. Additionally, pick up all the items you'll need, such as toys, leashes, and a food bowl, to ensure your pup has everything they need.
Havaneses are, indeed, considered to be a small-sized breed of dog. As listed by the American Kennel Club, the Havaneses stands at 8-11 inches tall and weighs an average of 7-13 pounds. The small size of the Havaneses is suitable for those who live in an apartment-style living, making the breed an ideal choice for anyone looking for a dog that does not require much open space for exercise.
Havaneses are highly intelligent and quite active dogs, so many of them love to swim. With their naturally curly coat, the water can act as a comfortable adjunct to the summer heat. Their strong, muscular legs help propel them through the water with ease, and their thick undercoat makes them well-equipped to handle colder temperatures. Although swimming is not a mandatory activity for Havaneses, it can provide them with plenty of beneficial exercise and joy.
Havanesses generally form strong bonds with their families and tend to get along well with kids. They are highly affectionate and playful, making them excellent companions for children. They have also been known to be gentle and protective of their human companions, especially kids. On the other hand, Havaneses can also bark excessively, and this could become unpleasant for the children if the pup is not trained properly.
Havaneses are considered to be remarkably intelligent and curious. Their inquisitive nature provides them with a unique ability to make quick decisions and adapt to just about any situation. Not surprisingly, Havaneses have shown a deep love for learning. They thrive in an environment that allows them to actively seek out knowledge through play and exploration. In fact, Havaneses are known to respond to their owner's body language and tone of voice, picking up new concepts in remarkable speed.
