Questions & Answers
Havaneses are an active breed of small-sized dog that were originally bred in Cuba. They are believed to be a mix of Bichon type breeds like the Bichon Frise and a Barbichon type breed due to their characteristics. One fun fact about Havaneses is that they are very intelligent dogs and are easily trained, making them great family pets. Another fun fact is that Havaneses have fur that is silky and wavy, giving them an aristocratic look. They also have a head shape that is unique in comparison to other breeds.
Managing allergies with Havaneses can be done by following a few simple steps. First, to reduce the risk of reactions, keep an eye out for areas of the home or yard that may be contaminated with allergens. Also, be aware of anything that could irritate the dog's skin, such as molds, pollens, flea bites, etc., and take measures to minimize these. Regular baths and brushing with a gentle shampoo and brushing regularly to remove pollen or other allergens should also be practiced.
It is best to avoid feeding Havaneses table scraps, raw meat, bones, and other fatty or sugary foods. Foods that are high in fat and sugar can cause weight gain, pancreatitis, and other health issues. Additionally, foods that are too salty or spicy can cause stomach upset, vomiting, and/or diarrhea. Foods such as chocolate, avocado, and grapes can also be poisonous to Havaneses and should be avoided. It is best to provide your Havaneses with high-quality, grain-free dog food that is made specifically for small breeds.
Before purchasing a Havanese, it's important to purchase some essential items to ensure your pup is as safe and comfortable as possible. This includes a crate, high-quality food and treats, durable and chew-resistant toys, a grooming kit, a collar with an ID tag, a leash, and puppy pads. It's also important to research products that are specific to Havanese dogs, such as foods and supplements for their thick coats. Having these items ahead of time will help create a safe and comfortable home for your pup from the get-go.
The size of your Havanese puppy will depend on several factors such as the size of its parents and its genetic makeup. Generally speaking, Havanese puppies will mature to an average size of between 6 to 12 pounds and reach a height of 8 to 11 inches. However, it is best to discuss any concerns you have with your veterinarian to get a better understanding of the particular size and weight of your own puppy.
Although there has not been a scientific study completed to definitively answer such a question, anecdotally speaking, many Havaneses love to swim! The breed is known to be lively and outgoing, making them pleasant as both city and beach companions. On the beach or at a lake, Havaneses likely will enjoy paddling around and potentially fetching afloat objects in the water. Of course, they may need some coaxing and introductions to the water at first.
Havaneses make wonderful, loyal family dogs. They exhibit sweet, affectionate temperaments, often forming strong bonds with members of their family. They are highly trainable, thrive in households that provide structure and consistent training, and are protective of their homes and of their people. Moreover, they are small but sturdy dogs with minimal shedding, making them a low-maintenance breed that is well-suited for apartment living. They are highly social and require moderate amounts of physical and mental exercise and need opportunities for socialization.
Havaneses are known to be intelligent and responsive dogs, making them a popular choice for people looking for a pet. They rank among the most loyal and easily trainable breeds, and in general are considered to be very smart. You can find information as to why this breed has scored so highly on intelligence tests; their problem-solving ability, obedience, versatility and memory skills all come into play. With the right guidance and patience, they can be taught various commands and tricks, and be trained for activities such as agility and/or retrieving, making them truly great pets.
