Questions & Answers
The most interesting thing about Havanese is their fun-loving and outgoing personality. They are the perfect combination of a loyal and faithful companion with a spunky and cheerful attitude. Highly adaptable, Havanese can adjust to almost any lifestyle and possess an immense capacity for forgiveness. They form strong emotional bonds with their owners and love to cuddle and be affectionate. Havanese are highly intelligent and learn quickly, making them an excellent choice for obedience training. They are also avid conversationalists and can be trained to bark on command.
Havaneses are considered a low-shedding breed. They don't tend to shed profusely and have moderate grooming needs. It is important to keep in mind that despite being a low-shedding breed, they still need regular brushing and bathing to get rid of loose hairs. Without these, the ends of their hair can become matted and tangled, which can lead to more fur being shed. Additionally, regular haircuts can help you maintain the coat and minimize shedding.
Havaneses, like any other breed of domestic dog, typically eat a high quality dry kibble specially formulated for their individual needs. Additionally, they may have occasional access to other sources of protein, such as cooked meats and healthy snacks in between meals. Depending on their individual activity levels, their diet should also include a mix of fats and carbohydrates. Additionally, regular check-ups with a veterinarian to determine their dietary needs is advised. To ensure healthy nutrition, treats should be limited and supplements should be provided only under veterinary supervision.
Preparing for a new Havanese pup is essential for a successful partnership. Start by gathering the necessary supplies for your pup, such as food, chews, beds, crates, toys, and other items to make your pup feel comfortable. You may also want to consider puppy-proofing your home, with gates and/or barriers to protect your pup from potential hazards. Enrolling your pup in obedience classes is also a great way to foster good behavior and communication between you and your pup.
Generally, Havaneses have a lifespan of up to 15 years and tend to grow to a height of 9-11 inches and a weight of 7-13 pounds. Some may be larger in size, though it is rare. They have a round head and strong body that is covered with a thick, abundant coat and a bushy tail that curls up over their back. Havaneses are surprisingly strong which allows them to have an energetic nature and remain active into their senior years. Despite their tiny size, they are known to be loyal and alert, making them a great family companion.
Taking your Havanese on a run can be a great way to bond and give them exercise; however, it is important to keep in mind its size and endurance level. Due to their small stature, Havanese will get tired quickly and may not be able to keep up with your pace, especially if you are a more experienced runner. It is recommended to start with short runs of 10 minutes or less and gradually increase the distance and intensity as your Havanese adapts and builds up its endurance.
Havaneses are indeed a great breed when it comes to being around kids. Their warm, friendly, and sociable personality makes them an excellent companion for any child. Their intelligence and eagerness to please make them easy to train, which can further help create a stronger bond between the puppy and kid. Although they need some exercise, they are a small dog breed that is full of energy and love to spend time playing indoors with the kids. Havaneses are especially patient with children and rarely have aggression issues.
The amount of minutes per day that you need to train your Havaneses depends on a number of factors, including their age, activity level, and health. Generally, it's recommended to provide Havaneses with at least 30 minutes of activity each day, broken up into two 15-minute sessions. For puppies, it's best to add a third 15-minute session, and for older dogs, you may need to adjust as needed depending on their health. Additionally, there should be plenty of time for interacting, engaging in play, and teaching basic commands.
