Questions & Answers
Havaneses, also known as Bichons Havanais, are a small breed of dog belonging to the Bichon family. They are considered a class of toy dog due to their small size and bright, cheerful temperament. Generally, Havaneses are about 9-11 inches tall and weigh 6-13 pounds. They have a thick, wavy coat that is usually white in color, but may also have cream, gold, or champagne tints. These dogs are very friendly, outgoing, and intelligent, making for the perfect companion to many.
While all dogs have the potential to cause an allergic reaction, Havaneses have low-shedding coats, making them a good fit for people with allergies. Their coats are also very soft and silky, meaning that they do not have an undercoat that would cause fur to build up. Combined with the fact that they produce very little dander, these dogs are generally considered to be hypoallergenic. Additionally, they need to be groomed regularly to maintain their coat, which means that the fur and dander that would normally be in a household is regularly removed.
Havaneses are omnivores, meaning they will eat both meat and vegetables. A healthy Havaneses diet should include a combination of proteins, such as lean meats, as well as carbohydrates like rice, grains, and starches. As with most small breed dogs, it is important to ensure that your Havaneses gets enough nutrients while avoiding too much fat. To ensure proper nutrition, many Havaneses owners feed their pup a combination of wet/canned and dry/kibble foods.
Before getting a Havanese, you should make sure to buy the necessary items to ensure your pup has a safe and comfortable home. Essential items to have include food and water bowls, a sturdy and chew-proof dog bed, an appropriate sized crate and crate cover if crate training, squeaky toys and chew toys, puppy treats, a leash and collar or harness, and grooming supplies such as a brush and nail clippers. You should also purchase food and treats specific to your pup's dietary needs.
The size of your Havanese puppy depends on its gender and genetic make-up. Generally, a male Havanese will reach around 8 to 11 inches in height when fully grown, while a female will be around 7 to 10 inches high. Additionally, a typical full grown Havanese will usually weigh somewhere between 7 and 13 pounds. Ultimately, the size of your puppy will also depend on its diet and health, so it is important to provide your pup with proper nutrition and regular check-ups with the vet.
Havaneses are a high-energy breed of dog that enjoy staying active. Generally, these canine companions need between 45 minutes to an hour of exercise each day spread out over multiple play sessions. Exercise should include a good long walk, a game of fetch, and perhaps even an agility session. A Havaneses' exercise routine should also include activities of mental challenge to keep their minds engaged. Of course, the exact amount of exercise will depend on your pet's energy level and lifestyle.
Generally, Havaneses get along very well with kids. They are people-oriented and friendly dogs, and they love being around children. They do require patience and consistency when it comes to proper training, as do all dog breeds, but they can usually be very good with children of all ages if properly socialized and taught how to behave. These types of dogs can become highly attached to their families, and love nothing more than spending quality time with them, including children.
The amount of time per day that it is recommended to allocate for training your Havaneses depends on numerous factors such as the age, size, and activity level of your pup. Generally speaking, it's best to spend between 15-30 minutes per day on activities such as teaching basic commands, providing mental stimulation, and physical activity. However, experienced and frequent Havaneses owners recommend, if possible, to increase this to 45-60 minutes of targeted training depending on the breed's age and size.
