Questions & Answers
Labrador Retrievers are beloved for their intelligence and enthusiasm, but one of the most interesting things about them is their extraordinary sense of smell. A Labrador Retriever's nose has approximately 220 million scent receptors—which is about 40 times more than a human—making them incredibly adept at detecting even the faintest odors. They are frequently used in scent-based activities, such as detecting disease, locating lost people, tracking illegal substances, and even performing search and rescue operations. This amazing ability makes them invaluable to many branches of the military and law enforcement.
Labrador Retrievers are not hypoallergenic. Hypoallergenic dogs generally do not have nearly as much dander—the source of most allergic reactions—as typical shedding breeds. Because of their double layer coats, Labrador Retrievers have an insulation that traps dander and other allergens. This means that they shed hair more often, which can bring up allergens and cause adverse reactions in those with dog allergies.
Labrador Retrievers are often described as having insatiable appetites, so it's important to provide them with a well-balanced diet that meets all their dietary needs. Generally speaking, they enjoy a variety of foods such as lean meats, like beef, chicken, lamb, turkey, and fish; fibrous carbs, like brown rice, potatoes, and oatmeal; fruits and vegetables; and healthy fats such as eggs, cheese, and nuts.
To best prepare your home for your new Labrador Retriever, make sure you have designated puppy-safe zones and have all necessary supplies on hand, including those related to exercise and hygiene. Start by puppy-proofing your home, including blocking off areas and hiding cords or other items of interest. Keep cleaning supplies stored in a cabinet or closet, or outside of your home, as your pup may be tempted to try to access them. Provide a comfort zone area where your pup can rest and relax in a safe space.
Labrador Retrievers come in three common sizes: standard, miniature, and toy. A standard Labrador is typically longer, ranging from 21.5-24.5 inches tall and weighing 55-80 pounds. Miniature Labradors are usually smaller in size, measuring 14-17 inches tall and weighing 20-45 pounds. Toy Labradors are the smallest of the three, usually reaching no more than 12-14 inches tall and weighing no more than 20 pounds.
Labrador Retrievers are incredibly active dogs with lots of energy. Bred to aid in hunting, they easily tire out people with their enthusiasm and need for daily exercise. These dogs typically thrive when they have an outlet for their energy, such as daily walks, games of fetch, or jogs on the beach. Any type of interactive play like hide-and-seek or tug-of-war often appeals to the retriever's high-energy nature. Their love for outdoor activities makes them ideal for running, trekking and the occasional swim.
Labrador Retrievers are known to be exceptional family pets and particularly good with children. They are generally patient, loyal, and gentle, making them perfect playmates for children of all ages. Labradors are known to be devoted and affectionate towards their owners and are eager to please. They have a cheerful, calming presence and are obedient, responding well to training. With their innate intelligence, they can learn quickly, making them ideal for teaching children different tricks and commands.
Labrador Retrievers are incredibly smart. With an understanding of over 200 commands, they rank among the top 5 smartest breeds and can understand new commands with only 5-15 repetitions. They have an uncanny ability to interact with humans and react to their facial expressions and gestures, indicating that they go above-and-beyond when it comes to intelligence. Additionally, Labs are perceived as eager to please and can quickly adapt to changing environments. They have even been known to excel in activities such as agility and search and rescue training.
