Questions & Answers
Labrador Retrievers are highly trainable, affectionate dogs. They are good-natured and have an excellent temperament. Labs require regular exercise and need to be taken on long walks, runs, and hikes. Labs are also known to be strong swimmers, so access to a river, lake, or pool is ideal. They thrive in an environment with plenty of space to run around and play. Training must begin at an early age and should include basic commands and proper socialization around other animals. Training can be achieved using positive reinforcement and always remain consistent.
Labrador Retrievers are not considered hypoallergenic. While they do have short coat hair that does not shed very much, they still release some dander, which is known to cause allergic reactions in some people. Additionally, their drool also can provoke a allergic reaction in sensitive persons. It is important for those looking for a hypoallergenic dog to do some research and look into dog breeds found to be more tolerant of allergies.
Labrador Retrievers should not be offered too many fatty foods like bacon or burgers, as these can cause them to gain weight and result in other health issues such as heart disease. It's also important to keep certain fruits and vegetables away from Labradors. For instance, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, and other members of the allium family can be toxic and cause adverse reactions. Additionally, Macadamia nuts should be avoided as they can cause vomiting, fever, and even respiratory failure. Chocolate, especially dark chocolate, can be poisonous to Labradors.
Before bringing your Labrador Retriever home, you should prepare your home for its arrival. Make sure that your home is puppy-proofed and safe. Remove any objects like toys, plants, or cords that your puppy may be tempted to chew. Make sure that any dangerous objects like medications are safely locked away. Secure any small spaces where your puppy may be able to hide or get stuck. Create a comfortable area for your pup to sleep with a bed, blanket, and chew toys. Ensure that the area has plenty of ventilation and access to sunlight.
Labrador Retrievers are a usually a medium-sized breed, typically weighing between 55-75lbs and standing 21.5-24.5 inches tall as an adult. The size of a Labrador Retriever puppy directly correlates to the size of their parents, height, and weight. For example, offspring from parents that weighed more would likely weigh more as well. As a puppy, your Labrador Retriever could range anywhere from 10 or 12 inches tall/long and weigh 20-30lbs depending on their parents' genetic traits and nutritional needs.
Labrador Retrievers are an active breed and require regular exercise. They need at least 30 minutes of exercise each day. If they do not get enough daily physical activity, they may become bored or anxious. It's important to consider your Lab's age when deciding how much exercise they need young or very active Labradors may require upwards of an hour of exercise each day, while senior Labradors may require much less. A mixture of physical activity such as walks, runs, hikes, off-leash play, and swimming are all great activities for Labradors.
Labrador Retrievers are generally known for their kind and friendly demeanour, and as such, they generally get along well with other pets. Some Labs have been raised together with cats and other small animals, and under the right supervision, they can often become great friends. It is important to always introduce new pet family members slowly and gently, and to provide consistent training and guidance to ensure harmony and respect between the new pets. With the right approach, Labrador Retrievers can be great family companions to other animals, and provide many years of joy and companionship.
Training your Labrador Retriever is not particularly difficult, but it does require consistency. Start by teaching your Labrador basic obedience commands like sit, stay and come. It's important to consistently use the same word when teaching commands, so your pup recognizes the word and its purpose. Once your pup has mastered the basics, introduce more advanced commands such as hand signals and tricks. If your pup is having difficulties, break the commands into smaller parts that are easier to understand. Use treats or verbal praise to reward your pup for successes. Be patient, and it's important to remain consistent and positive.
