Questions & Answers
Labrador Retrievers are incredibly friendly, easygoing, and intelligent dogs that have been beloved as family pets and working dogs for centuries. They are considered to be one of the most popular dog breeds in the world.
Labrador Retrievers are surprisingly minimal shedders, which makes them a great fit for those with allergies or who want to keep their home clean. Though much of the breed's coat is short, it's dense and highly water-resistant, contributing to their moderate shedding and easier maintenance. Grooming is necessary, however, and their thick coats need to be brushed and combed regularly in order to keep the coat healthy and attractive. On average, Labrador Retrievers will shed more during the twice yearly shedding season, so may require additional brushing and combing during this time.
Labrador Retrievers should not be fed certain items such as rawhide, chocolate, or other human food, as they can be harmful to their health. Avoid feeding them human food such as candy, french fries, chips, and even certain healthy human snacks, as some food can lead to medical issues such as obesity and gastrointestinal problems. It is best to stick to specialized dog food, as they are rich in nutrients formulated for puppies and adult dogs. Avoid feeding them other animals' food, such as from other pets or wildlife, as it can lead to serious digestive and intestinal problems.
It's important to be prepared for welcoming a new Labrador Retriever into your home. Of course there are the dog basics that you should always have on hand like food, toys, treats, collar, leash, and a bed. You may even want to buy a puppy-proofing kit to make your home safe for the younger Labradors. It would also be wise to purchase more specialized items for your pup, such as a crate or playpen for early training and confinement if needed.
Labrador Retrievers come in three different sizes: standard, medium and miniature. The standard size is 22-24 inches at the shoulder and weighs between 65 and 80 pounds. The medium size is typically 18-21 inches tall and weighs between 50 and 65 pounds. The miniature size will reach a maximum height of 15-17 inches, and usually weighs no more than 55 pounds. All Labrador Retrievers have the same breed characteristics, regardless of size, such as a strong desire to please, a friendly, outgoing nature, and intelligence that makes them easy to train.
Labrador Retrievers are known for their strong affinity for water. Swimming is one of the most natural activities for them, as they were bred specifically to work as water retrieval dogs. On hot days, a cool plunge in the water is usually welcomed with great joy, as you'll be able to tell from your pup's earnest tail wagging. Not to mention, it's an excellent form of exercise that can improve mental and physical wellbeing. All in all, Labs love the water, and swimming is no exception.
Generally, Labrador Retrievers are very friendly and tolerant of other animals, such as cats, rabbits or smaller dogs. That being said, just like any other breed of dog, proper socialization is important in order to ensure that they get along with other animals. Introductions should be made in a controlled, safe and calm environment and positive reinforcement training should be used to help reinforce good behavior.
Absolutely! Labrador Retrievers are widely considered to be one of the smartest and most trainable breeds of dog. According to the American Kennel Club, Labradors particularly excel at obedience and working intelligence. They are very eager to please their owners, making them relatively easy to train, and most Labrador Retrievers can learn to obey all basic commands with relative ease. In addition, Labradors bond very closely with their owners and are extremely loyal, which may contribute to their overall intelligence.
