Questions & Answers
Labrador Retrievers are among the most popular breeds of dog in the world, thanks to their loving nature, adaptability and intelligence. They are an excellent choice for a family pet, as they are known for being loyal, sociable and gentle with children and other animals. They can be active and playful, so they require regular exercise, both mental and physical. Labrador Retrievers can be bought from a reputable breeder or adopted from a rescue centre, with most enjoying swimming, going for walks and playing fetch.
Labrador Retrievers are considered nonshedding dogs, though they do shed lightly throughout the year. It's important to note that all dogs will shed to some degree, but the shedding from a Lab should be minimal. Regular brushing and grooming can help to reduce any extra hair from shedding, and early desensitization to brushing can help to make the session more enjoyable for both dog and owner. When maintaining a proper brushing routine, you can expect to find minimal shedding on furniture, carpets, and clothing.
Labrador Retrievers are often referred to as a "giant lapdog" because of their eagerness for companionship with people. As with all dogs, Labrador Retrievers need a balanced diet to maintain their health and energy. An appropriate diet for Labradors should include high-quality dry dog food that is nutrient-dense and free of fillers, fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as some homemade food items like boiled eggs, lean meats, rice or pasta. Additionally, they require ample access to clean, fresh water.
Before your Labrador Retriever arrives, you should make sure your home is ready for them. Start by baby-proofing your house block-off any staircases, secure cords and wires, and identify any other hazards your pup may encounter. Also, set aside a space for them in your home such as a crate, blanket, and/or bed so they can feel safe and secure when not being played with. Make sure any outside space is also secure, as Labradors are known for being quite adventurous. Last but not least, stock up on pet supplies.
Labrador Retrievers usually reach heights of 22.5 to 24.5 inches from their shoulders and can weigh anywhere from 55 to 80 pounds. Depending on the person raising them, Labs may end up larger than average. Labs can also vary in size and appearance depending on the strain of the breed. The AKC currently recognizes three varieties: English, American, and Field. Generally speaking, the English, or "Show" Labradors, are usually a bit heavier and bulkier, while American and Field Labs tend to be tall and lanky.
Labrador Retrievers absolutely love the water! It is believed that the breed developed near the water and have commonly been used as fishing and hunting companions. The Lab's webbed-feet, dense fur and otter-like tail are all physical traits that make them strong and natural swimmers. Many owners claim that their Lab is happiest when playing in the water! In fact, some Labs will go so far as to jump in the water when an owner pretends to toss a ball.
Labrador Retrievers have a reputation for being one of the best family dogs. Not only are they friendly and playful, but they are also gentle and loyal. This breed is incredibly intelligent and eager to learn, making them a great choice for families looking for an obedient companion who can also be a source of entertainment. Their strong people skills mean that they usually get along well with children and adults of all ages. Additionally, their constant desire to please their families can lead to lifelong bonds.
Training a Labrador Retriever requires consistency and patience. Start by teaching the basic commands of sit, stay, come, leave it and drop it. Breakdown larger commands into smaller ones to make it easier for the pup to understand. Be sure to reward the correct behaviors with treats, toys or praises. Start with short training sessions and gradually increase the length as your pup masters the commands. Familiarize your Labrador Retriever with the environment by taking him on regular walks in different areas and introducing him to new friends.
