Questions & Answers
Labrador Retrievers are a very popular breed of dog with a long and distinguished history. For starters, their undeniable friendly nature makes them a wonderful choice for families with children and other pets. Fun fact they were originally bred to be water-retrieving duck hunters! They are highly intelligent dogs, often ranked amongst the top 10 in terms of obedience and working intelligence.
Labradors are classified as a low-shedding breed, but they do shed some hair all year around. That said, they have a short, dense, water-impervious coat that will only require occasional brushing and combing to minimize shedding. When regularly groomed, they will regularly lose less fur on furniture and clothing than other breeds. In addition, Labradors are not known to be hypoallergenic, so if you or anyone in your household suffers from allergies, you should consider another breed.
Labrador Retrievers should never be fed anything containing chocolate, caffeine, grapes, raisins, macadamia nuts, or onions, as these can be toxic and even fatal to dogs. In addition, moldy or spoiled foods, table scraps, fatty food trimmings, bones, or any foods with high sugar or salt content should also be avoided. It is best to feed Labrador Retrievers a balanced diet that is specially formulated for their health and nutrition needs, and consists mainly of premium-grade dog food.
Before bringing a Labrador Retriever home, it's important to properly prepare your house so your new pup feels comfortable and safe. First, be sure to secure all hazardous items like cleaning products, medicines, and other toxins that could be dangerous if ingested. Next, create a safe space for your pup that is completely puppy-proof with toys, a comfy bed, and other items that will keep your pup cozy and occupied. Make sure to also secure any places your pup could get stuck, like behind furniture or in the vents.
Labrador Retrievers are not considered small dogs. A large breed, Labrador Retrievers are typically between 21.5 to 24.5 inches in height and typically weigh between 55 to 80 pounds. This places them well outside the range of what is typically referred to as small dogs. As a comparison, a Chihuahua is usually only 6 to 10 inches in height and weighs between 2 to 6 pounds. It's easy to see how those two sizes compare.
Labradors Retrievers are a highly active breed, so they should get at least an hour of exercise each day. This can take the form of walks, runs, games, or some light swimming even. It is important that Labs get mental stimulation as well as physical exercise, so taking them to obedience classes or to the dog park is also an option. Remember though, make sure the activity is appropriate for the age and condition of your specific dog. Other activities such as scent work or sending them through agility courses can be fun and mentally stimulating.
Yes, Labrador Retrievers can make wonderful companions for children. They are known to have a friendly and outgoing personality, which makes them excellent playmates for young ones. Not only are they affectionate and calm, but they are full of energy and are eager to please their owners making them perfect friends for children. Furthermore, Labradors are highly trainable and respond very well to learning tricks. These intelligence traits make them great candidates to teach children responsibility in terms of taking care of their canine companion.
Labrador Retrievers are widely considered one of the smartest and most loyal breeds of dog. Their intelligence, athleticism, and ability to form strong bonds with their owners make them an excellent choice for those looking for a smart, four-legged companion. They are considered to have great problem solving skills and typically have an above-average memory retention. They are excellent at learning commands and reading body language, making them ideal for service and therapy work.
